Is Silver City NM good place to live?

The locale, the town amenities, and Western NM University contribute to the quality of life in the area. However, there are three large, open-pit copper mines operated by Freeport McMoran near the town. These mines are the pimary employers of the local residents, consequently, the fortunes of the community rise and fall with the fortunes of the mines and the price of cooper. Right now, their fortunes are good and the mines are expanding. But of course that won't last indefinitely as these things are cyclical; so things can change rather quickly. And then there are the environmental impacts associated with this kind of industry which can be devestating, although FMC seems to do a good job of minimizing those.

All in all, Silver City is OK.

Thanks, Clarence. I applied for a job at the U and was idly looking at rentals and came across this thread. I'll take it and move if they offer.

You will find Silver City a good place to live if it is a true quality of life that you seek. We have a fine community and wonderful weather (never super cold or super hot. You can thank the high desert for that! ). Silver City also has excellent medical facilities and a four-year university.

I come from New Jersey and have been here for 8+ years. The people are friendly and laid back. The downtown is a wonderful mix of history, art, shopping, eating and outdoor activities.

There are many hiking trails, camping and hunting opportunities.

There is the Mimbres Regional Arts Council that does a fantastic job of bringing in cultural events.

You can find this in any big city, anywhere. What exactly do you mean by racism - white vs black or Hispanic vs white?

Silver City is in a rural, quaint section of SW New Mexico. We have 4 seasons but none are severe. Our altitude is about 6000 ft and you can find outdoor recreation at almost any time of year. And with not alot of traffic: vehicle, foot or hoof. Grant County has about 30,000 residents and Silver City proper has a little over 10,000. Interesting downtown with shops, coffee houses and restaurants/bars. Nice smaller 4 year college too.
