Is it common to buy a gift for your agent?

Asked by Bruce, Las Vegas, NV Sun Feb 1, 2009

Is it appropriate to purchase a gift for my agent? She has done a fantastic job in getting us the perfect home. If so, what type of gift and approximate price range would be considered okay?

Hi Scott,

What a refreshing question! Is it common to buy a gift - no. Is it appropriate - sure! In life, anytime somebody provides a service that is felt to be superb, a thank you is appropriate. Gift baskets and dinner gift certificates are something that I have either received or have heard of quite a bit. Go with your gut and any thank you is going to be appreciated. It is really nice for an agent to receive a gift a work (let's say cupcakes for example) that not only show everyone that they did a great job, they can share too *smiles*. On behalf of agents everywhere, Thank You for being such a thoughtful person.

I've received a few gifts from past clients as an appreciation for my services. Although I agree that the best way you can show your agent you value his services is with a referral, I must say it is very rewarding when a client goes out of their way to buy something personal for you. Example: A client of mine that I've been working with to short sale his home gave me a new tie and handkerchief as a present. They weren't expensive items, but the idea that he went out and put some effort into the gift was very thoughtful. This client has also sent me several referrals, but I will say the fact that he bought me a gift will always stand out in my mind.

If you think highly enough of this agent to want to buy him a gift, then I can only assume you will be sending him future referrals anyways. But believe me, he/she will definitely appreciate an actual gift (even if it is a low value).

Although I am sure a gift would be appreciated, I agree with the other remarks that a referral would be even more appreciated.

It certainly isnt required nor expected. Providing a letter of appreciation can make an agents day for sure. telling others of the good experience is always welcome and if you really want to buy something. A gift certificate to a nice local restaurant is always a favorite. Thanks for the great question

Scott,

The best gift an agent can recieve is a referral or a letter of appreciation for a job well done.

Besides referrals, another gift that investors give their agents is repeat business.

Overall, we are well compensated for what we do, so really no gift is necessary, but always welcome.

While a gift it appropriate, and a lovely thought.. the very best gift you can give your agent is to send her referrals of those you know... and of course a well written testimonial sent to her managing broker, would go a long way.

If in addition, you'd like to send her a gift card to a local restaurant, or perhaps gift certificates to the local movie chain (in any amount that you deem appropriate) that would be lovely.

Hey Scott,

You are more than welcome to buy me a gift, just kidding! It is not common for us to receive gifts. The best and most appreciated gifts you could get for an agent are referrals of your friends, family and colleagues.

When one of my past clients refers someone they know to me, I feel very appreciated for the work I did for them. It shows me that my past client was very thankful for my work and knows that I do a great job.

In the meantime, ask your agent and their significant other out to dinner sometime. That would also be a great token of appreciation.

Good Luck!
