A Few Questions About Tracking Best Answers

A few different questions for Trulia on best answers. Feedback or ideas from the community welcome. 1) When reading a thread, is it possible to note on the top that there is a best answer? It would be nice to see if one was chosen. 2) Would it be possible to search a profile of "Best Answers". I would be interested in reading others' best answers, and consider it a learning experience for myself. I would consider that informative for the public also. 3) Can an alert system be set up to notify the author of a best answer. I am also curious when one of my answers is chosen, but have no way to identify it. Open to any ideas from the community on this....pro or con. Tks!

I am not nearly as sensitive as Sylvia to the "Good Answer" responses. When answers are only frivolous, as was the recent succession post that rattled many, it becomes obvious to the poster, the public and Trulia. That does not put all “good answer” replies in the frivolous category. I believe that positive reinforcement, particularly of important points in posts, carry meaning to the public and aid in demonstrating the strength of the answer to all. A well deserved "good answer" is also a nice gesture to those who invest considerable amounts of time at Trulia.

Again, I am not supportive of frivolous posting as a tally count. I believe I can speak to this because I have a high number of posts, and many of my posts took 30 minutes or more to write and consist of a few paragraphs. If my objective were simply to collect tally counts, I wouldn’t invest the energy I do into the other posts. I don’t write one line posts often, and if I do, I hope the poster knows it is sincere when I say, “Great answer!.”

I expect my tally count to maintain strong for the next 30-45 days, and then probably decrease. I do not currently have a blog, but plan to launch one in the near future. At that time, I will continue to post on Trulia, but out of necessity of time allocation, will divide time between the endeavors. I will remain active on Trulia, and think Trulia is terrific.

I believe the cumulative posts as reflected in Top Voices do provide value and a quick snapshot of Trulia. When I first joined Trulia, I read through many of the top voice posts. I found this to be an extremely helpful orientation to Trulia. I also noticed a light heartedness, comraderie, and attitude of mutual respect among the posters that was a huge drawing card that made me want to be a part of Trulia. I saw several posts of “good job”, “I agree”, and a few jokes. I saw lots and lots of thumbs up for answers and questions. It told me that these people were confident enough in themselves to say, either verbally or through the thumbs up vote, “good job” to another. I skimmed the top voices, read many of their Trulia posts, and subsequently went to many of their blogs. I found incredibly talented individuals with commitment to the industry and a sense of personality, humor and respect. Thank you to Trulia for allowing me a vehicle to find them. Thank you to them for the incredible wealth of knowledge that they represent. These people represent the top bloggers in the country and were asked by Trulia to help seed the initial content for Trulia.

I believe that self governance can do much to keep abuse and excesses in check. Yes, we need Trulia moderators to step in at times and take corrective action in the areas of abuse. But, I am a strong advocate of free flowing content. I also think its great to say and hear “Thank You”, “Good Job” and “I Agree.” If these posts are used to grandstand oneself, then the content was empty and shame on the poster. When sincere, it makes us human and lets us smile. I don’t want that to go away.

Sylvia, I think you have great real estate knowledge and experience and many worthwhile posts. I just can’t vote for excessive governance or an environment that is absent smiles and gratitude.

Here’s a few of my agreements, disagreements, and additional suggestions, for what my two cents are worth:

1) I think it could be demoralizing to take away a best answer from someone. So, I can’t vote for that. I think a “Runner Up” category might be useful. Not necessary, but perhaps useful.

2) “No best answer” might be an option for a the author of a question. Some don’t know to choose a best answer, others might not be able to.

3) A page down to the second page of summary could be interesting.

Another thing I would like to see unless there is already a better way. When I am in my profile and I find I have been given a useful answer, it would be nice to know when you "look at Carrie Answered", to know if it had a thumbs up or thumbs down response.

A couple other suggestions which were mentioned just recently:

1) Allow the owner to override selection of Best Answer because a better one might come along
2) Send a gentle reminder after a few days to the Owner to select a Best Answer - sometimes they don't know.
3) For SUMMARY DISPLAY page (best answer, most useful answer, most answer) - I would love to be able to page down to see the next group of people.

Now a question - What's the value of 'most answers'? I think in another thread we noticed how it may mean nothing. Sometimes just adding a 'Yes, I agree with the three of you' or 'Thanks, so and so' but nothing more count for another answer. So, I am not quite sure if it adds that much value and could very well encourage people to either hastely answer a question with very brief and pointless anwers or digging into old questions that are time sensitive just to answer.

Just a few of my observations.

By the way - Trulia Roger's 'Good Suggestions' is an exception to the above.

It would be awesome to be able to do that and mostly when you have answered so many questions like you. I can imagine how difficult it would be to go back to find which of your answers had a "Best Answer" with so much pages to go back!!! Thats an excellent idea Deborah!!!!

I read Deborah's answer, considered, and decided I agree with her about positive reinforcement. Wrote a big note about that and sent it on.

I received a thumbs down on that answer, which is fine - it basically said that my answer is not useful, and I agree with that - it's irrevalent to real estate.

So, I looked at what happened today and decided that I spent spent too much time talking about positions on the posting, and not real estate..... So I am getting back to Real Estate

I deleted my last answer and decided to post this instead -

By the way, the original question and suggestion about easily find good / best answers are good!
