We've sold homes like this before on Victoria the seller and buyers had the same question. Turns out the house was on the lot line, so the house would have had to be moved to split the lot. Which you can tell by looking on zimas http://zimas.lacity.org/
There is information online. However, I was able to get better answers by going in person.
