What are the canals going through the city of San Leandro?

Asked by East Bay, San Leandro, CA Fri Apr 10, 2009

If you look at a map of San Leandro, there are a few canals going through the city and behind some houses, like Estudillo Canal and Corvallis Canal. What are these and what do they do?

Yes these are flood canals. And know this if you live in San Leandro you are in flood territory. I do not know of anyone who has had to pay for flood insurance so I would not worry about that.

Thank you for the answers. When I saw these, I thought dirty water run through them. Am I way off! Are there any problems with insects or flees?

The Creek that runs by Estudillo Avenue (that is where I live) comes down directly from Lake Chabot, where there is a dam that holds the lake, this creek serves as the runoff from there. The lake is one of the most visited lakes in the bay area and it provides great hiking trails, camp grounds, fishing and boating. It offers several picnick areas and is a great place to take the entire family.

The Creek by Corvalis is actually called the "Estudillo Canal" and is a flood control channel. There is also a very important Creek called "San lorenzo Creek" between San Leandro and San Lorenzo, this cannal also serves as a flood control and provides a runoff for the Don Castro Reservoir in Hayward.
Thank you for your visit.

They are flood control channels designed to keep parts of Alameda County from flooding, especially during severe rainy seasons such as those that accompany El Niño.
