I had the same issue when I was school. I also received C's and D's in classes that bored me. To include Calculus in college. From my point of view the best thing you can do is try to get your child into classes he enjoys and challenges him. For example the last year in high school I took Applied Physics, Organic Chemistry, Applied Calculus and some others. This was against what my teachers recommended but it did help to keep me focused in high school.

But when I went to college I had the same issues. I have a degree in Bio Engineering and receive A's and B's in advanced classes but had to take Biology 3 times to pass it.

He most likely thinks about things much differently then most people do. His mind will often wander unless he is solving a problem that most people would need a calculator for but he can do this without paper or a calculator.

These are my experiences and I have a similar IQ.

First you have him evaluated by a trained psychologist and/or physician to rule out attention deficit disorder, or some other problem. If no psychological or physical (meaning "brain") problem can be found, then I suggest you try finding him a teacher who is strict, fair, and will challege him. He may just be bored. There are huge differences in school experiences based on the teacher the child has. There are very good and very bad teachers, although most are somewhere in between. Your child needs a very good teacher! And you have the right to ask for one (although many parents don't realize this).

Suplement his education at home with good books. No TV in the bedroom! No video games in the bedroom. If possible, unclutter his room, so that all there is to do in there is read or sleep.

I do not believe that hitting a child is a good idea. It may teach them to be afraid of you, but that's about it.

You whoop his ass !!!!! He sounds just like my son, he would be in class actin like a dam fool but smart as hell (and spoiled). What did I do you ask? I whooped that ass when he acted stupid and took all of his privlages away. He made a drastic change. Now his intelligence shines through his behavior!!!
