Hello, this is not so much of a problem when using the right remedy.
First and foremost, the holes should be sprayed at dusk with just about any top-rated insecticide and plug all the holes in the morning.
Then all siding should be covered with one coat of top grade polyurethane.

I can't speak for Ann Arbor, but I have some cedar accents on the front of my house. These have recently been "attacked" by carpenter bees. I purchased a product called Ultra-Kill Wasp & Hornet at Lowes. At dusk, I shot the stream into two holes (it shoots 20'), and immediately a carpenter bee fell out of each hole and the ground. I will be filling those holes this weekend.
