http://www.the-best-insurance.com will give you the best rate in your local area.

Take a look and you can pick the type of insurance you want and go from there. A local agent will call you within minutes.

Go to http://www.opic.state.tx.us. The Office of Public Insurance Counsel does an analysis of the different policies and has a policy comparison tool called helpinsure.com. You can plug in your address and get unbiased feedback on available coverages and rates. OPIC is a state agency so they are not trying to steer you to a particular company.

Whenever I do a home loan I shop the insurance with three name-brand companies. State Farm, Farmers, Nationwide.

In order to save time, ask your mortgage guy/gal to email you a copy of your appraisal-then just forward this to whoever you need a quote from. Because 95% of the questions they'll ask you can be found on the home's appraisal. Or call me http://www.mylendingplace.com

I agree with Bruce. I've had years of good experience with Dubbose and associates. If you have a few properties, you may want to consider an umbrella policy.

Insurance is one of those things that are tough to shop online. Every company seems to have a little different policy or cover a little different things. For example if you have multiple homes there may be a discount. Depending on who you work for there may be another discount. If you insure your cars with them there may be another discount. Some companies cover slab leaks some don't. Some cover mold some don't. Online quotes might be a good start, but it probably is good to speak with an agent and find out the details of each coverage.

I always go through Ty Lawrence Insurance in Austin and send my clients there. They are a brokerage and shop for me ... Ty Lawrence & Ed Hindsman, 512-732-2353, tylaw@swbell.net. I am cautious of looking for quotes on line because I do not want a bunch of insurance agents / firms calling me and not sure that that takes everything into consideration such as combining all of my policies for the best rates etc.
