However, by the 1990s, Native Americans became concerned about the misuse of the term "Redskin", and launched a nationwide campaign to eliminate this designation from sports teams, many of whom had caricatured "Redskins" in a negative fashion. In Arvada, the Redskin mascot was always presented with respect, and admiration, for our native forbears. Nonetheless, under pressure, Arvada High School decided to eliminate the Redskin mascot in the late 1990s. Initially, they were known as the "Reds", and a few years ago, the mascot became the Bulldog.
Like you, many native Arvadans continue to mourn the loss of our "Redskins". Redskin memorabilia can still be found at the Arvada Historical Society, where many members graduated as Redskins.
