How can a foreigner looking for a condo open a bank account in the US from abroad?

Asked by EddietheViking, Florida Tue May 27, 2008

I am a norwegian citizen and currently looking for a condo in the Ft. Lauderdale area. The dollar is historically low against the norwegian currency, but this may change fast. Is it possible to open a bank account in the US now from abroad, transfer lets say 50 K dollar to this account, and use this to buy a condo in a year or so? Or do I have to be in the US to open an account? If yes, what do they need in the bank? (I am going on a short trip to new york in a couple of months). Is a passport enough? And are there differences between the banks? Whats my best bet? Rumors say that Bank of America doesnt require a social security number in order to open an account?

Any info appreicated!

(PS - I know that I can use PayPal, Etrade etc., but I dont want to miss the interest rate.)
