a licensed contractor could tell you by looking in the attic or if you are a 2 story home examine the wall itself. If it is load bearing you can still do it but you must build a beam to support the load once the existing wall is removed. The alternative is to widen a doorway to create the feel of an open room. The cost is minimal if it is not load bearing. The clean up is the worst part. Of course there is a concern of the floor. If you are in an older home with hardwoods you are going to have a difficult time putting down new floor where there was none and getting it to match.
