- Tarrytown & Deep Eddy - Mopac to Lake Austin, south of 35th
- Pemberton Heights - Lamar to Guadalupe, Enfield to approximately Westover
- Brykerwoods - directly north of Pemberton and Clarksville
- Clarksville - Mopac to Lamar, 5th street to approximately Enfield
Essentially, all these areas lie within the 78703 zip code. The nearest catholic school is probably St. Austin's at 21st & Guadalupe. They serve grades K-8. http://(www.staustinschool.org)
Northwest Hills is also a good option for older homes on large lots. Check zip 78731. It lies primarily between Mopac (loop 1), 360, 2222 and Hwy 183. St. Theresa's ( http://st-theresa.org/school/index.shtml ) is in the area is well recommended.
Lastly, older homes can be found in Westlake, while newer homes lie in Barton Creek surrounding St. Michael's ( http://www.smca.com).

Good luck and let me know if I can provide additional assistance.
I have lived in Austin all my life, and am familiar with central Austin. Please call me if you would like to recieve more information about any of our homes, or any other homes in the area.
The areas you are looking at are all great. I was born and raised in central Austin and know the areas well. Tarrytown is 1B and Westlake is 8E and 8W. http://www.independencetitle.com/austin/images/stories/toolb If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

I also know of a luxury Arts & Crafts home in Rollingwood which is slightly closer to private schools and runs about the same as Tarrytown in prices. It's a luxury property so it depends on your price range, but it's an absolutely beautiful home.
Crestview and Hyde Park also have great Craftsman style homes but are farther from larger private schools. The lots are also much smaller and often the homes are as well.
Contrary to some previous information, in Texas there is no law that requires you to be pre-approved before submitting an offer, although many sellers will ask for it to prove that you're actually able to afford what it is you're putting the offer in for. Still, it is not a requirement, just prudent to have one.
Obviously, your choice of location depends somewhat on where your husband will have to commute to. Presuming he's going to be downtown, the the choices you've made are all good, but each offers a different neighborhood feeling.
Are you looking for proximity primarily to a Catholic School, or very good private schools? There are some very, very good private schools that are non-denominational - I'm Catholic by upbringing, so I don't mean to slight anyone.
Price will be your controlling factor based on the neighborhoods you indicated as acceptable, and what square footage you're willing to look for. Tarrytown will run on average $300/SF, Clarksville/Old Enfield - $350/SF, Enfield closer to the lake (further West) - $325/SF, West Lake/West Lake Hills - $320/SF.
Note the pricing per square foot does not reflect the condition, as closer into town you tend to get high cost per square foot, but not necessarily as good of condition because your paying much more for the land.

Whether you are visiting or relocating you will find Austin to be a friendly, energetic, diverse community. Aside from our Arts and Entertainment there is always something going on to suite most everyone’s interest. The communities that you have mentioned are excellent and represent a different feel. For example if you want a community where you can walk to little neighborhood amenities and like the Craftsman style homes Hyde Park offers several choices with sidewalks and little cafe's. Terrytown neighborhood has gentle rolling hills, generously landscaped yards, and is tucked back away from commercial sites and through traffic. Some of these properties also abut our Lady Bird Lake recently named for Lady Bird Johnson. Old Westlake is located directly across from Terrytown on the lake and has less of a neighborhood feel and is situated in more pronounced hills and homes can be tucked away in a very private fashion. Lots vary and can be as large as several acres. Both Terrytown and Westlake have excellent independent public school systems. Our Catholic Schools are scattered throughout the city and all grade levels are not found in the same location. These are just some of the physical attributes to consider and I am sure that you will find when you get here exploring these communities will be imperative to suit your taste and interests. No doubt you will have fun! Another major consideration is commute time to both schools and work. Our traffic infrastructure can be daunting and time consuming. Time can be precious when you have little league, after school commitments, or concerns about young drivers. Regardless of where you choose to live you will find Austin to be a friendly town. If you would like to explore these neighborhoods, our independent public schools, and private schools, my partner Doug Wiggin and I would be delighted to assist you now and when you arrive in Austin.

I hope you have an opportunity to move to Austin. Austin has a lot to offer a young family in terms of affordable housing, great schools and entertainment. Your research on Austin shows and these are great neighborhoods to focus your search on. I would also include Rosedale, Crestview, Brentwood and Hyde Park. These are all located in central Austin within close proximity to the best Catholic schools and offer the style of construction you are looking for. Your budget and size requirements will determine which neighborhood fits best. I would be happy to set up a customized web site for you with homes in these areas so you are educated the price range and taxes for each neighborhood. I can also include a cost of living analysis comparing Knoxville to Austin to help in the decision making process. Let me know the best way to deliver this information by contacting me directly.
You really need to find a good real estate agent that knows and has experience in your areas of interest. Furthermore, you need an agent that has experience with the type of home (style, price range, neighborhood, etc.) you are looking for.
I found a great site that has tons of listings and are very helpful in setting you up with an expert, it's completely un-biased and based on agent performance history, they will put you in contact with one or a few Realtors that you can feel out and choose from. Much better than going with the first pitch you hear from an agent (see examples below).

Excellent questions and outstanding neighborhoods! Austin is an exceptional town with outstanding ammenities and world class offerings - all within a small town package. I don't think you would be disappointed relocating from Knoxville.
In addition to the neighborhoods you mentioned, there are a number of homes in Hyde Park and Travis Heights that might match your criteria. Typically, getting around town from the central or southern locales is not much of a problem for schools. The link to the austin diocese has been provided below.
Hyde Park, Tarrytown, Travis Heights, Clarksville are all going to be wonderful old, established neighborhoods that will have an abundance of local offerings for coffee, restaurants, shopping, ammenities, etc... These are in demand neighborhoods because of these types of offerings.
As you are in Travis Heights, Tarrytown and Enfield you will be literally steps from Lady Bird Lake (Formerly Towne Lake) for hiking, biking, walking, picnicing, etc... A great place to just unwind.
Let me know if I can be of further service.

Tarrytown, Clarksville, Enfiled ... excellent neighborhoods. Other neighborhoods where you will find Crafsman or older include Travis Heights, Hyde Park. School-wise ... depends on the age of your children.
