Scam! Anyone with real estate interest in Worcester is going to have oodles of friends and colleagues. YOu can to to the MA registry of deeds online if you want to see if he really owns the house, but I'd pass on renting. How does he fix the dripping faucet over email? I wouldn't top him with a 10 foot pole. Face it, the reason you rent is so someone else can take care of everything. If he really is the landlord, good luck getting his help on anything but the rent reciept

I have heard of this similar scam as well. Its popular through craigslist too. Have you started negotiations site-unseen? If that's the case, I'm guessing you'll be waiving a right to a walk-through with anyone, prior to taking possession. I think its important to preview and do a "walk-through" documenting any disrepair and discussing solutions; prior to handing over money.

THAT IS A SCAM! This is a known scam and often takes place now. Do not send any information or money!!! Contact the police and FBI. This has happened to my clients before.

According to the public record, that is the owners name. Isn't there someone in Worcester representing him that can hand you a key when you give them the check? If there are no real estate agents or another individual you could meet with involved, I'd be weary. Perhaps you and have an escrow agent hold the funds until you get the key.
