Neighborhoods within 45 minute commute to Dunwoody, GA near the Perimeter Mall

Asked by Greg, 94583 Fri May 9, 2008

I was just notified that I will be transferred to Atlanta and I am looking to close on a house by mid July. I will be working in Dunwoody near the Perimeter Mall and ideally would like my rush hour commute to be 45 minutes or less. My wife and two children require a SAFE neighborhood with excellent schools. Safety is of particular importance as I just looked at crime statistics for the Atlanta MSA and was blown away by the number of violent crimes committed in the MSA on an annual basis. Our price range is $300k - $400k for a 4 bdrm single family home. What neighborhoods and cities would you suggest we look at in more detail? Thanks for your help!!

There are some beautiful areas around the Perimeter Mall and it's a great area to live in. We moved here a year ago and have lived in lots of different places. We have found it very safe and nothing like the awful place it seems to be from the news on TV. We bought right in Dunwoody, My husband puts his computer in his back pack and has a leisurely 5 min walk to work while he watches all the rush hour traffic. We can walk everywhere from the Mall, to Costco, Home Depot, and dozens of restaurants and can take Marta to the city. My husband travels a lot, so taking Marta to the airport makes his life a breeze. The traffic at rush hour is horrible so I would never live further north. I would rather have a smaller house and no stressful commute.

Hi! Greg,

Congratulations on moving to Atlanta! There are many options for you and your family. Working near the Perimeter Mall allows you access to different directions to get home. Some areas that I would suggest would be Alpharetta, Roswell, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Chastain Park area. I would like the opportuniy to work with you and your family on your new adventure. I would like to send you a relocation package with great information about the Atlanta neighborhoods. Please contact me via e-mail with your contact information so I may be able to send you this information.

The Athens-Clarke/Oconee County area is a little longer drive, but it would definitely get you into a town that has Big Town amenities while feeling like a "Small town." Check out homegain.com and put in zip code 30606.

Why not look in Dunwoody, that would make your commute 10 minutes or less! Dunwoody was recently rated as "the best neighborhood to raise a family", and Austin and Vanderlyn elementary schools are among the very best in Georgia, being ranked in the top 10 (and often as #1). Just remember that the crime stats cover a HUGE metropolitan area -- some areas with very high crime rates 15-20 miles away can skew the stats for the whole area. Most people would consider Dunwoody, itself, to be safe. Traffic patterns ARE a big consideration, and traffic coming into the Perimeter Mall area (because of it's location near the intersection of Ga. 400 and 285) can make a normally 15-20-minute ride a 1-hour or more rush-hour ride. In other words, the closer, the better! Unfortunately, the MARTA train system doesn't extend past the North Springs MARTA station, which is only about 2 miles north of Perimeter, so it's not very helpful to Roswell, Alpharetta or South Forsyth commuters.

Hi Greg,
There are so many great areas to live around Dunwoody that should put you very close to your job. With gas prices go up and up, I would recommend staying close in. YOu can catch Marta at Perimeter Mall to take you in town. We have used the Marta train sence its birth and have never had a bad experience on it. I do know things do happen and maybe we have been lucky. The schools in this area are great, the shopping is wonderful and tons of activities on a non stop venue. Has your company put you with a relo company or will you be on your own in your search? I would be happy to help you in any way. I lived in this area for 10 years and know it well. Thank you and Good luck/

Greg,

There are some great places for you to choose from within your commute radius. I'm a relocation specialist with my company and work with a lot of people making the same decisions you are.
Schools will most likely play the biggest factor in determining where you choose to live.

Here are some great sites to review our public schools http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ and http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/go/GA You will want to look for schools in Gwinnett, Forsyth (south), and possibly cobb & Cherokee Counties.

There are some fantastic deals on homes here now and some great new construction incentives in your price range and search area. I would be happy to assist you with your search and provide you with information on some great communities.

Hi Greg,
Our family has lived in the metro Atlanta area for over 40 years. We have seen a lot change in that time. Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek and Duluth come to mind for the best areas north of Dunwoody and your job. All these are great cities for families looking for great schools, public or private. These are closest for commute times too . Suwanee and Cumming are on the outer edge of your commute time, but probably offer you a little more for your money. The particular neighborhoods in these cities depend on your lifestyle. Do you want that close in neighborhood feel with all the retail and office right around the corner...or do you prefer a big lot a little farther out in the suburbs? There should be plenty of choices in your price range in most of these areas. My wife Debi, is our Buyer/Relocation specialist. She would love to help you shop for your new home should you decide to live in any of these areas. She can set up some custom searches that will feed new listings, that fit your criteria, to your email on a daily basis as well as sending you a relocation package for our area. I am sure other agents will respond with their favorite cities and neighborhoods too. Please let us know if we can be of assistance.
