I would like a certification as either a Eco Broker or the new N.A.R. Green Broker, which is better?

Hi Kristina,

Happy to talk with another Evergreen Broker about the EcoBroker, green designation versus the NAR Green designation. In the nineties I was pretty active with the Built Green program http://www.builtgreen.org/ -- which was more of a set of guidelines for new construction to adhere to to earn the designation (property specific not broker specific) and during the process learned quite a bit about the various topics that both designations you mention offer in their Curriculum.

Overall, if you like to accumulate designations I think the EcoBroker designation has a deeper reach of information related to both curriculum and resources, however the Green Sustainable Property Designation carries the power of NAR's branding which may be enough to make it more valuable since you can cross reference the education you receive from NAR with the wealth of free resources on the EcoBroker site!

Ultimately, the real value lies in how you can apply your new knowledge to your clients!

Good luck and please let me know which way you go...

Bob has really pinned this issue down, 'Ultimately, the real value lies in how you can apply your new knowledge to your clients!"

My experience continues to support the premise citizens respond to encomonics. How do you / we plan to educate the consumer of the 'real' economics of sustainability? There are lots of ways to do it but hardly any have their origin with the number of letters you accumuilate. The pursuit of designations is a red herring you should reisist unless you have loads of time to kill and money to spend.

Do a bit of brainstorming about buyer and seller eco issues. Where is the demonstratable difference or savings? Why is this a tangible econmonic factor for a buyer or seller? Your eco and green designation have little value if they can't resonate with the 'Why do I care?" and "What's in it for me?" questions of your buyer or seller. How can you wrap this around your marketing and project your urgent message?

If you only have a foggy idea of how these designations will make you money, you will indeed be kissing your money goodbye.
