John Kelly, Other/Just Looking in Sun City, CA

Hi, I may be relocating to work in Wayne, NJ. What towns/cities will provide a manageable commute to Wayne?

Asked by John Kelly, Sun City, CA Mon Jan 26, 2009

I am looking for rentals / apartments / condos that will provide a decent commute to Wayne, NJ. I am open to living in Wayne but would like to explore other options as well.

Help the community by answering this question:

Ok John,
Slight problem would be the dog especially if you look to rent. As far as a condo is concerned most condo associations, but not all, allow dogs but often with a weight limit of 35/40 lbs. Although I must admit to showing a unit last week where the person had a Great Dane/Greyhound mix!
Its a little easier with the Townhouse style where you have a separate entrance but the mls listing has a specific field where the agent has to indicate whether pets are allowed and if so what the weight limit is. That is something a realtor can help you with.
If you like old then 2 come to mind. The Mill in Little Falls is an old factory by the river and waterfall. Some but not all the units have 12 ft ceilings. Does allow dogs but I am not sure if there is a size limit. The second is in Pompton Lakes called Iron Forge Sq which also allows dogs
A 2 bed unit in The Mill a littleover $300,000 In Iron Forge a bit under $300,000
If ypu want new there is a gated community in Butler that is maybe 5 yrs old. Bit pricier for a townhouse as opposed to a single level condo.
All the towns mentioned in my 2 answers are great and within 15 minutes or so of Wayne

I just got back to my desk after spending the afternoon showing condos in Wayne to a young couple who are actually looking to buy so I know whats there.
You could try Wayne, North Haledon or Hawthorne as the closest. A bit farther out and a little cheaper you could go to Butler, Lincoln Park or Pequannock.
You could buy a 1 bedroom condo for as little as $200,000with 2 bedrooms at around $275,000 and up depending on age and condition.
You would find a rental in one of those towns as well and expect to pay $800 and up (plus utilities) for a 1 bedroom.
Anyone of those towns you would have a 15 or 20 minute commute depending upon where in Wayne your job is.

Hi John-

What kind of community are you looking for? There are rentals and condos in every town within commuting distance to Wayne. Do you want a town with housing within walking distance to local shopping and restaurants? Is the school system important to you? What kind of building would you like to live in -- pre-war or newer construction? What is your price range?

Please call or email me. I can help you narrow down your search and answer your questions. I cover Essex and Passaic County which includes Wayne and neighboring towns.

All the best with your new position.

Hi John.......
Ok, well I think I will throw my hat into the ring!!!

First of all - Welcome back to NJ!

Please feel free to email me, and I would be happy to provide you with some suggestions in my area. "My" area encompasses Essex and Morris counties - towns such as Livingston, Millburn, the Oranges, Caldwells, Little Falls and towns slightly west, such as Morristown, E. Hanover and Parsippany. All are easy commutes to Wayne.
A lot will depend on your price point and comfort level. Just like ice cream - all the towns mentioned have various flavors!
It would be my pleasure to help you or guide you in the right direction.
All the best!

Hawthorne is very close to Wayne - You can cut thru the college for an easier commute to your place of employment. The town of Hawthorne is a small town - close to Ridgewood, Wyckoff, etc. If looking to rent perhaps a condo - if looking to purchase the Heights section is very nice too

if I can be of any assistance, dont hesitate to contact me.

Please note I live in Wayne, NJ and it is a very nice and safe place to live. I have lived in Wayne for 15 years and it is very convenient to shopping, restaurants, NYC, etc. It will be dificult finding a rental with a dog. If you are looking for garden apartments/apartment complexes there is Berdan Court, Wayne Village (I think they take dogs), Tulip Gardens, Brooklawn Gardens, Tulip Gardens, Mountainview Crossing (I think they take dogs). Also you may hear a lot about the floods of Wayne. The township does have a flood area but it is a small percentage of the town and only Mountainview Crossings is near it. Other towns to consider is Pompton Plains, Pompton Lakes, Lincoln Park, Totowa as they are neighboring towns. I hope this helps.

So John, now that you've given us some information about yourself, we need to know whether you'd prefer to rent or buy and what might be your price range?

If you provide me with your email address, I'd be happy to send you listings of properties that are available now to give you an idea of what you could choose from. If you do relocate, when would you anticipate coming to New Jersey?

Thanks for all the is some more info based on the responses so far:

I am a single male (37 years old) looking for 1 but preferably 2 bedrooms. I have a dog (large but a trained house dog) that will be coming with me...a yard is not necessary, schools not important, decent (safe) area is very important, shops close by is not an issue either way and I like and am open to older buildings that have been modernized / warehouses or new construction. I grew up in Central / coastal NJ but have not been up north in over 11 years. I have heard there has been a lot of revitalization up there.
