My wife and I are retiring soon and would like to retire in the Pawleys Island or Daniels Island, SC area

Would like to know feelings on the areas of Daniel Island Charleston area and the True Blue, Hidden Oaks, Pawleys Place areas to name a few, of Pawleys Island/Myrtle Beach area. How are HOA/POAs? What is the class/type of people on each. We consider ourselves average, and don't want to seem out of place. Trying to figure out where we best "fit in" and fits our wants in retirement. We need true feelings to help us narrow our search. Thank-you!

I read your question regarding Pawleys Island and Daniels Island but I would like to suggest you take a look at our area..Santee/Manning, SC. We are located approximately 60 miles from Pawleys Island and Daniels Island off I-95. We have several beautiful golf courses with HOA fees of 350.00/year (The Wyboo course was rated as one of the top 10 public courses in SC by golf digest in 1999) and new patio homes start around $145,000.00 and up. Some of our older courses don't even have HOA fees anymore and new homes are avaliable on them for 225,000.00. We also have a 110000 acre fresh water lake called Lake Marion that runs through our towns that host 4 major bass tournaments a year and 2 major cat fish tournaments a year. We have many retired people from all over the United States and Canada that call our small towns home! If golf carts are a method of transportation to you, you want to know your neighbors, and you like for people to call you by your name....then Manning/Santee will be a good place for you to call home. Hi Mark, I am an Agent with Prudential in Pawleys Island. I am familiar with the neighborhoods you mentioned and they all have their pluses. The True Blue community is on one of the more challenging golf courses and has several floor plans and units to choose from. The Hidden Oaks community is paired ranch homes with private garages, one floor and plenty of storage and I have one listed that is lakefront, and Pawleys Place has its appeal also, an established community with private garages, some units lakefront and master bedrooms downstairs with additional bedrooms and upstairs. The monthly HOA/POA varies with each community. But all offer a maintenance free lifestyle!

What a great idea! I am pretty familiar with Pawleys Island and go there often and am less familiar with Daniels Island. However, I own a home in a great community in Surfside Beach (about 10-12 miles north of Pawleys Island). We are 240 feet from the beach and have good ocean views. Most of the homes are built on pilings 8.5 feet up (park up to 4 cars underneath) and have about 800 sq. ft. on each level. There are lots of retired people in this gated community. You could buy a 4 BR 3 BA house for around $350K.
