Hi Su,

Elain from Trulia here. We (Trulia) just partnered with Greatschools.net to bring you over 250,000 parent reviews and rates and school stats on over 125,000 schools nationwide. You can find the school data on any specific property page (scroll all the way down) or on the Neighborhood Stats & Trends pages. Here are the links for quick reference:

http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/New_York-New_York/#school_…
Click on any school districts to find a full listing of schools.

You can use the Map View or Street View to see how close you are to train stations as well.

Good luck and feel free to email customerservice@trulia.com with any questions or feedback!

Best,
Elain

Su, Nashua to NYC--now that's a change! Very cool. Your criteria (price, schools, commute) can easily be met on Long Island. There are many lovely homes in your price range and w/in 30-45 min commuter train ride to Manhattan. This site http://www.longislandschools.com/ will give a snapshot view of Long Island schools. Su, here is the link to the school systems in NJ http://education.state.nj.us/rc/
As you can see by the previous responses, commute to NYC is accessible from various parts of NJ. You would need to decide, which county/part of NJ you would prefer to live in.

Hi Su,

Middlesex County is a great area to be in, because you're right on the North-east Corridor for NJ Transit to Penn Station, along with plenty of express buses that go into the city as well. Additionally, there are plenty of nice areas with great school districts where you can easily get a 4 Bedroom, 2 Bath home for 400-500K (depending on exactly what you're looking for). Edison, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, and East Brunswick all have great school districts and are close to mass transit to NYC. These are areas that I work in and know well, so if you have any questions, or would like information on what's available, please don't hesitate to contact me!

I handle alot of NYC commuters in the town of Nutley, we have some great gated communities as well as multi and single family homes. Nutley is only 10 miles away from manhattan and has a bunch of different options for communting into NY. If you would like to see what is available in your price range contact me via my website.

What do you consider "easy commute" ? The north east corridor rail line goes into Penn Newark. Many Princeton residents commute daily to NYC and Philly (though most would drive to Philly) As to the quality of the schools, Princeton speaks for itself. Neighboring districts of Montgomery WEst Windsor and Hopewell are all top notch. The next question may be what can you get for $400-$500K in these areas and are you willing to take less house to get better schools and how important is the commute?

I am in Morris County and a great deal of our residence commute to NYC by way of train or bus. We are around 25-35 miles from NYC depending on the town. Many of our schools are highly rated. Since we all define a "good" school differently: here is the NJ School Report so you can evaluate school districts yourself. http://education.state.nj.us/rc/rc07/menu/01.html

If you decide to come to Morris County: Parsippany, Morristown, Whippany etc please feel free to contact me.

I too can suggest several good towns with excellent schools in Bergen County, just over the GW Bridge from NYC. My community, Teaneck, for instance, is literally 5 miles from NYC and has very easy bus transportation to NYC taking 35 minutes into midtown (depending on traffic, of course!), but there are a number of others with both train and bus access. We have a large number of homes in your price range in a variety of styles and neighborhoods, and I would be happy to help you! I am an experienced realtor (check out my webpage) and am familiar with many parts of Bergen County. Give me a call and let's work together soon!

Hi Su. Are you looking to purchase in Edison or any surrounding area of NYC with a good school system? There are several towns in Essex County and Passaic County with good school systems and with easy commutes to NYC. If you are interested in taking a look at Essex and/or Passaic County, feel free to contact me and I can send you the relevant school and commuting information. Good Luck!

Edison and Piscataway have great schools and a good commute to NYC. Have you considered any towns in Morris County? Great schools, MidTown Direct, and low taxes (compared to Middlesex). Call me to discuss what Morris County has to offer you. Also, right now, I'm really loving Somerville, if that is convenient for you! 201.463.9656.

JP Stevens High School of Edison won #1 in NJ Science League Chemistry competition last year over hundreds of all other high schools and NJ high school rank jump 30 places up from 82 to 52 this year. With that speed up, year or two would be top 10 for sure ...

Commute to NYC would be Metropark Train Station ... http://metroparktrain.blogspot.com/

If your best school district means SAT scores, then Piscataway High School got 9 students this year obtained full scores. Many students got admitted to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, U Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Standford, Berkeley, ... and I am currently at UC Berkeley since my son just got admitted to UC Berkeley; I took him to join Overnight Host Program ...
