Home Buying in Owasso>Question Details

Elizabeth, Home Buyer in California

My husband and I and two children are interested relocating to Owasso.

Asked by Elizabeth, California Sun Apr 20, 2008

We currently live in California, but my husband has family in OK. We have two small children (eight and five). I see that the schools are excellent, but I was wondering about how well our family would be welcomed into the community. My children attend a very small public school (about 200 students), and I am wondering if it would be a big adjustment not. Living in Bay Area is very fast-paced and intense, and we'd really like to have our kids grow up in a less stressful environment.

We would be looking for a home for us (about 2500-3000 sf), and a couple of rentals (location depending on percentage of renters vs. owners).

Thank you very much.

I raised my kids here in the Owasso school system from about the 4th grade on, when we moved up from Tulsa. The elementary school system is excellent. We have awesome principals and good schools and teachers. Once the kids move into 6th grade they go into "centers". These years are very formative and the kids seem to enjoy being together. The Owasso system is large and growing. It is rated excellent. Children can and do fit in, but there is a social structure in place. However, that being said, it doesn't seem that kids who are from other areas have issues fitting in, if they are good at fitting in. Collinsville is a great school system just up the road. It's a bit smaller and is becoming a strong school system of choice. We also have an excellent private Christian school here in town as well. I invite you to check out the awesome new search feature for homes on my website at http://www.BobHaywood.com as well. It's free!

I grew up partly in Fresno, CA and partly in Owasso, OK..so I understand both worlds. It is a big adjustment for children, what I experienced is that the Owasso schools were more advanced than California schools and it took some adjusting, but when I moved back to California I was ahead in school. The reason I moved from California is because even though I loved the fast paced living and quality of life, I didn't want to raise my family there. When I started having children I moved back to Owasso. It is growing rapidly, but we still have our hometown spirit. I am an ambassador for the Owasso Chamber of Commerce and we put on activities and parades throughout the year. Every Fall friday night you will see our city gathered at the stadium to support our football team. Our band is one of the very best and our schools are academically rated top in the state. We have many different shop, food and recreation options. Our community is clean and well protected. There is not a "bad" side of town and you can participate in as much or as little as you would like. We have many charities and organizations, as well as leadership roles. We take pride in our city of character and we think your family will love it here!! As a real estate investor, I have had many great opportunities and as a property manager, I have great success with my rentals. We have many nice neighborhoods for your family to choose from, so come on out and give us a try!!

I have some clients who just moved to Owasso and love the schools! They came from a school district called Oakdale in the OKC area and were concerned about the same things. They love it. The kids and mom have got involved and really have a peace about the move. In regards to rentals, the market in OK is still very strong. I have numerous investmant properties and have for years. If you would like to connect with my buyer to ask her some questions, mom to mom, let me know. I will set it up.

Hi Elizabeth--I am also from California--I grew up in Sacramento and also the Bay Area, then attended school in Southern California. My husband and I moved back here for many of the same reasons you are interested in doing so. It is easier to make friends here and get involved in the community. We live in the South County area ( Jenks, Bixby, Glenpool,Sapulpa, and South Tulsa) and have found most people to be open to having new friends and neighbors. Believe me, after Southern California, it is a breath of fresh air. Owasso is a great area and we have many other great communities South of there. By the way, there is a website I reccomend--greatschools.com. It has information regarding school scores, how they rate, etc. Please call me if I can help you with any other questions, and you are welcome to search for homes on my website- http://-www.manleyjeffersproperties.com - Lisa

Hi Elizabeth! I have been helping several families relocate to our area from California, South Dakota (most recently), and several other states. Our community is made up of families in all different socio-economic areas and we're becoming very diverse.

You may have already seen that Owasso schools are listed under the Academic Performance Index (under the No Child Left Behind) with excellent ratings - 2 elementary schools received the highest ranking possible (1500). Most of these schools have pretty low and acceptable student/teacher ratios. We have several brand new elementary schools so your children would not be attending a large school until they are much older and would have had time to adapt. We also have a smaller private Christian school in the area and several other private schools in the Tulsa area if you prefer.

I am an Oklahoma native and grew up in Collinsville/Owasso. I have seen this area change tremendously over the last several years, and now it offers some wonderful conveniences, yet it still feels small town with excellent community activities. I currently have my 5 year old enrolled through the local YMCA in soccer and we are having a great time!

As for homes in the 2500-3000sf range, we have many new construction as well as exisiting homes -- some on 1-2 acres in an affordable price range. If you prefer to rent, I can work to locate a rental that might work for you. Please contact me if you'd like more information so I can assist you better! I look forward to talking to you, and I would like to be the first to welcome you to our community!

Elizabeth, Owasso is a rapidly growing community... one of the fastest growing in Oklahoma. There are many people living there who are not from the area, so I do not think you would have any problem being welcomed into the community. Because housing prices here are affordable and have remained stable, we have seen a lot of people moving here from California. The schools are bigger than what your children are used to, but the class sizes are probably similar. My children moved when they were the ages of your children and they adapted easily to school changes. Involvement in community activities, sports, scouts, etc. helps make the adjustment easier. Feel free to e-mail me if you have additional questions about the area.
