Alpharetta has excellent public schools; Top of the line. The easy of commute depends on where you will be working and if you’re going the opposite way as the traffic. The city offers upscale shopping & restaurants. There is no need to go into Atlanta anymore to find something you want.
The streets in Alpharetta are clean & well maintained. Driving to North Point Mall with the trees dividing the middle of the street brings back memories of my childhood in Beverly Hills, CA.
Alpharetta offers equestrian, wonderful parks. The parks have children paying soccer, lacrosse, agility events for ones dog etc. etc.
For seniors many activities include special excursions to the vineyards an hour bus ride up 400 N. another is up into the mountains to Helen an alpine village that in October for the month celebrates Oktoberfest. (This is great when my parents come in to see the kids & are getting a little cabin fever).
Hope that this gives you a little feel for my city.

You also might want to consider Cumming, GA which is in Forsyth County. There are great schools in Forsyth. We currently have our home on the market which is in Three Chimneys Farm in Cumming in South Forsyth County. The neighborhood is zoned for Sharon Elem., South Forsyth Middle (kids can actually walk to school), and for 2009 - Lambert High School!!! Sharon Elementary's address is Suwanee. Property taxes are lower in Forsyth County as well.
Our house which can be yours is located at 4215 Arden Way MLS #3677034.
Suwanee is in Gwinnett Co. http://www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us/gcps-mainweb01.nsf/pages/GCPSH
Alpharetta is in Fulton Co. http://www.fultonschools.org/
Depends on where your job is for the commute. If you are going to work in the city of Atlanta and you commute during rush hours you are in for a hectic commute from either city. Depending on what you are accustomed to, you may be happiest closest to your place of employment.
Both areas have lots of shopping. Alpharetta has a huge mall, Northpoint Mall.
One nice thing about both areas is they have lots of people like yourself, who are relocating... it's easy to meet people and make friends.
I'd say that overall (not all areas) traffic in Suwanee is better than Alpharetta, but of course it depends on where you are going.
Taxes are lower in Suwanee and you can get A LOT more home for the money.
I think you should come down and see both. The schools are a ranked a little higher in Suwanee, but families there say there is little difference.
