Husband got a job in Southfield area, but we would like to live in Ann Arbor, because of good schools. Is it reasonable to commute that distance every day?

Yes, it is a reasonable drive but like Maureen (First to Answer) I would like for him to have a job closer to home. If you do settle in A2 will want to try to stay near the N.E. corner of town because living in the S.W. corner could add 20 minutes to his drive. Schools are an important concern for many people and I think they should be first on everyones search list. It effects the fabric of the community and the quality of life for all. Imagine how life would be if the grocery bagger, the waitress (waiter), gas station attendant, bakery clerk... had low quality schools (life could be worse). I welcome you to our area and wish you luck in your quest for a new home.

You might want to check out Birmingham/Bloomfield Hills. The schools are just as good there as they are in Ann Arbor, but it's a heck of a lot closer to Southfield.

My husband commuted 33 years to Ford Motor from Ann Arbor. We moved here fron Toronto too, off Bayview. We could have lived anywhere but we agree about the cosmoplitan feel and the great schools here and so we chose to settle here. For the latest on Ann Arbor events, see http://www.AnnArborTalks.com.

Olivera, It's possible to make that commute, but would you want to every day? 696 is very congested during both rush hours. If you are not making the commute daily during rush hours. Then this might be an option. Otherwise, expect a minimum of one hour each way.

I live in Ann Arbor and did commute to Southfield everyday for a short amount of time. It takes about 45 minutes depending on traffic. It could be longer. Just depends on the amount of time you want to be on the road everyday. Ann Arbor is great and I know why you would want to live here !

There are lots of people who do just that. It would not be my choice, personally, but I live about 1 mile from my office. There are some award winning districts that are much closer if schools are your priority. I would suggest your husband speak with some of his new colleagues and see what they say about the commute.
