Any reference for a good contractor to do a free estimate on items to fix in a house.

Hello Katie,
I suggest a great site called Service Magic. They offer pre-screened licensed professionals. They are rated by the people that have used them. You chose what category, such as if you need a contractor for flooring, roofing, etc., then you describe your need and they match you up to a contractor in your area.

Good Luck!

As an aside, it is always a good idea to ask for a contractor's license to to check the contractor's license board to ensure they are in good standing. Any job over $5000 requires a contractor's license. I would also suggest asking for references. Call them and ask if the contractor stayed within budget, their quality of work, communicated openly about project status and/or delays, as well as stayed within the approximate timeframe. I would go through this process with at least 3 contractors. These will help you find someone that is reliable, experienced and honest.

I have everal resources for you. Depending on the project. I have a great guy who will install laminate and engineered floors at unbelievable prices. Also, a guy who does concrete and floors, another contractor for installing cabinets and several items around the house. What can I assist you with?

Hi Katie,
I'm an architect in your area. Here are two contractors that I recommend:
May Construction; Greg May http://www.mayconstructioninc.com/
Morelan Associates; Jim Morelan (my office is in the same suite) (408) 247-3322
Both of these contractors have great attention to detail, quality employees, and good price. Jim Morelan is also an architect. Both companies have built my designs and my clients love them.
Good Luck,

A good contractor is hard to find, and usually busy even in a financial downturn. It depends on the type of work you are looking for him/her to complete. Talk to some of your friends or neighbors, someone that you trust and can see his/her quality of work. My husband is a contractor, and we have seen so many people go with a lower bidder and get exactly what they pay for.
What kind of work are you looking to get done? A handyman with a contractors license may do depending on the scope of work to be completed.
