Home Buying in Florida>Question Details

Bill Stavro, Home Buyer in Florida

Am from Canada - was looking to purchase a property in Florida - probably a condo - Marco Island?

Asked by Bill Stavro, Florida Sun Feb 8, 2009

What areas in Florida would come recommended for winter getaways and weekend holidays? Looking for an area that is somewhat relaxing, has beach access, and things to do. With the real estate correction, looking for value! What kind of property can be purchased for about $150-200k? Is Foreclosure the way to go?
Any help would be appreciated....will be making a trip to Florida in the next couple of months - will be looking to work with a real estate agent. Thanks

Hi Bill,

You should think about Naples and I have a home for less that $125,000. Naples will be one of the first areas to experience equity appreciation when the economy turns. I would love to hear from you.

To answer your questions about Marco Island, Florida. I am a full time Buyers representive on Marco Island.

There is plenty available for under $200K Click here for a live feed list http://onmarco.idxre.com/idx/hotsheets.cfm?cid=7363&hid=4637

You may refine this search by area and price.

Foreclosures are certainly an option, but not always the best deal. It's best to look at criteria first and then look at each individual property, foreclosure or not, to see how negotiable the property might be.

For example, an original owner who bought for under $80K 20 years ago, and now selling for $220K might well be more negotiable than a bank foreclosure trying to re-coup lost money at the same price.

Hello Bill,

Buying now is really smart move. You can get more bang for your buck. Choosing an area would very much depend on the lifestyle you wish to pursue.

Here in Punta Gorda we have recently been featured on US weekly's best places to retire. Money Magazine featured us a best place to live. I love Punta Gorda. We are situated 3 hours away from Orlando to the North and Miami to the South. Within an hours distance you have beaches, performance arts, kayaking and plenty of other activities. Punta Gorda itself is a beautiful city trying to maintain its small town charm but keeping up with growth and development.

Shortly we hope to have over a million square foot Mall "The Loop". We are certainly looking forward to that.
Drive through Punta Gorda and you will love it. We have had quite a few people move from Naples because of the cost of living.

My suggestion is to take a trip to Florida and drive around through a few areas before choosing where you'd like to buy.

Visit my blog for more on Punta Gorda.

Good luck. Hope you find what's right for you.

Hi Bill,

We have had the pleasure of working with many Canadian friends and would be happy to put you in contact with them to tell you about the Venice area. We are currently working with buyers from Toronto, Calgary, and London.

Slower paced, beautiful & easily accessed beaches, convenient to airports, wonderful weather, and most attractions, and presents the highest quality of life to its residents.

Additionally, there are many incredible opportunities for buyers to find their ideal property at substantial savings in homes that are very near to beaches.

Our recommendation is to find an agent that is willing to email you properties to preview prior to your visit. This will allow you the opportunity to become somewhat familiar with the area and property availability. We would be happy to include you in our FREE email program.

Please let us know if this has any appeal. We welcome the opportunity to talk with you about our beautiful location and what it has to offer relative to your personal needs.

Best regards,

Hello Bill,
You might want to take a look at the Northwest Florida Panhandle area of Destin/Navarre/Santa Rosa Beach!
There are a fair number of foreclosure, short sales, and other bargains to be had, but it is still a good market. Those sales are coming from people that overextended themselves, not from a hurting local economy. We have many Canadians who come here as snowbirds and come back year after year. Take a look at the area by going to http://www.Destin-FWB.com and see the aqua waters and the sugar white beaches that we have to offer. It is a vibrant area, with world class shopping, entertainment, and fantastic restaurants. I would be happy to send you a packet of information as well. I would love to have the opportunity to share what I love about this area with you. I came here 8 years ago and have never regretted my decision. Everytime I cross the water on the Mid Bay Bridge I think--"I can't believe that I am lucky enough to live here!" People spend up to 7,000 a week to vacation here and enjoy what we have to offer. We are surrounded by Federal Air Force land, so there is no urban sprawl, and lots of green space and wild life as well--just a great place to live, work, play, vacation, and visit!!

I look forward to hearing from you!
