How can a house be in 38139 and have a Collierville address?

Asked by Jen, Denver, CO Mon Jan 19, 2009

I was searching and noticed a house in 38139 but had a Collierville address. I know the house is in the Farmington district. Just when I think I have a handle on the area, I get more confused. Would appreciate anyone's educational tips. Thanks.

Just wait till you get here, the founders of our great city apparently froze up when it came to names of streets !
They just love the name "Dogwood", it drives me crazy! , then they go and rename Farmington blvd. to Wolf River Blvd, only because it angles off . It is like a great big puzzle!
You will love living here ! The weather is just as weird-In my bunko-no-brainer dice game- the new neighbors think we southerners are a different sort- and we are but proud of it !
You may even see snow flurries once every two years-and we close the schools if there is a possibility of any ice whatsoever !!! There is plenty of golf and weather will accomodate you most of the time! Few that get transferred here even end up leaving ! take care-YA'LL

Hi Jen,

I know this can be quite confusing - 38139 is a Germantown, TN zip code for the postal service. A small area of Collierville for now, receives it's mail through this post office. Also, the districting for schools (since both areas are in the "county school district") are in the same boat.

For instance, Houston Estates and Almadale Farms are located in the city of Collierville - right on the cusp of Germantown. For NOW, they get their mail is delivered through the Germantown post office. As this area grows - at some point, a new zip code will be issued for just this area. Same goes with drawing the lines for school districts. It's not a matter of if, just when.

The same goes for Lakeland, Arlington and the northeastern part of Bartlett. They all use 38002 zip code. Those three areas mentioned are all incorporated cities within Shelby county (and very different), but share a zip code, some school districts, fire and water service, etc.

If you are looking for a certain school district or area, please enlist the help of a Realtor that can navigate you through the process. Something this important shouldn't be undertaken on an assumption.

Let me know if I can be of any further help and welcome to the area!

Jen,

Thank you for the clarification regarding the Farmington school, not Farmington neighborhood.

Whenever you would like to confirm a school for an address utilize the Shelby County School Zone Locator to give yourself some assurances.

I'm referring to the Farmington School District. As far as I can tell from Shelby County School report cards, etc. they have the best test scores. I know there's more to it than the scores, but...that's the school we're interested in.

Jen,

There are a couple of areas along the Houton Levee Rd area that are in Germantown but have their mail delivered through the Collierville Post office. Sometimes the MLS and even the tax maps are very confusing. You mentioned the Farmington district, most, but not all, of the homes in that area attend Farmington. I would encourge you to work with a local realtor. Most of us are well aquainted with the school districts, etc.

Jen,

Parts of 38139 are in Collierville. This would be areas east of Johnson Rd, north of Poplar Ave (of course this is not an exact). As for something in the Farmington district, what exactly do you mean by that - Farmington School or Farmington neighborhood?
