If you could be pretty specific on what your needs are to have a nice, easy and happy retirement, we could see if Portland Maine is truly the place you want to be.
For the record, I love Maine, its a great place, semi-big, but not too big. Safe Safe Safe place to live with very nice people and friendly nurturing environment to raise a family.
These are the things that I require, what do you need?
Have you considered the Portsmouth NH area? The city is similar in size to Portland and it is only 1 hour to Boston (major city, airport, events etc..). Portsmouth is a very quaint town just 40 miles south of Portland also on the coast.
Maine is great place to live and Portland is a fun and friendly city. Depending on your interests and activities that you like, that would help with deciding on what areas would best suit your needs. If you want to email or call me I would be happy to put you in contact with some local people that might share your same intrests. I will not email you, or bother you, as I am sure that is a concern, as many brokers do that sort of thing. I grew up just outside of Portland and after traveling around the country in the service I returned to Maine as it is my favorite place so far. Again, if I can assist in putting you in contact with some local people or just answer some questions, feel free to email me at your leisure. Best of Luck.

The Portland Maine area has all the amenities of a larger city and few of the problems. The restaurants are too numerous and varied to mention. Portland has an active arts district with many galleries. great local theatre and a wonderful symphony too.
Aside from the arts, the area is visually stunning with ocean views, nearby lighthouses, and rolling hills too. There truly is something for everyone in Portland. You can experience city life in downtown Portland or go just 10-15 minutes out of the city and be in the middle of pastoral farmland. Maine provides many wonderful vacation opportunities year round including skiing, white water rafting, kayaking, visiting local bed and breakfasts and exploring the mountains, lakes and seashores throughout the state. There is a reason that our motto is: "The Way Life Should Be" Please visit my website at: http://www.kathiehooper.com for links to Portland area activities and best of luck with your move!
The greater Portland area offers a great variety of dining, theatre, symphonies and a huge array of other cultural events as well as being just steps from beaches and nature type living. To me Maine is a perfect mix of culture and class with the best of nature and a whole bunch of "real" people.
I hope that this has answered your questions and best of luck with your decision. Our website has a relocation portion where you can request a free relocation package with lots of free Maine info.
