Martin, Home Buyer in New York, NY

What towns should we avoid buying because of the Westchester County airpoirt noise?

Asked by Martin, New York, NY Wed Mar 19, 2008

I've heard it can be awful in some towns. Any advice? We're moving up from the city, thinking Bedford, Armonk.

I live only a few miles from the Westchester County Airport (HPN) in Armonk. I don't hear the planes indoors and I barely notice the noise from the airport when I sit outside on the deck. If you live more than a couple of miles out from the runway, it is doubtful that the noise will be a nuisance.

In Westchester you wil encounter plane noise primarily in Rye Brook and parts of Mt. Pleasant. However the plane noise in Banksville is considered fairly " low". The best thing to do is to call Westchester County airport and ask how to track ativity over a particular area. http://www4.passur.com/hpn.html
Plane noise to and from LGA exist throughout Westchester. The controllers reroute traffic depending on weather or wind conditions so many towns will experince some noise at some point in the week, but it should not be bothersome except for a few minutes. Westchester is lcoated near several airports such as LGA, Westchester, JFK, Newark, Stewart and Philadelphia it is part of living in New York.

thanks for the help. I was looking at a house on the back side of Bedford (Banksville) and the planes were so low, so often, I couldn't leave fast enough. Mostly private jets but I could see a JetBlue and a AirTran. I stopped a neighbor and asked and they said the flight patterns that changed were to LGA, not Westchester. They said Sunday night between 4 and 7pm it's almost unbearable, even compared to NYC noise! Maybe I'll stay in NYC after all!

Once again, I think the media hype far outweighs the problem. There is a difference in the last year (the flight pattern changed in July of 2007 according to local airspace protest group) but it's nothing like the noise one has in on a daily basis in NYC. I just gave up a NYC apt after 20 years @ 26/Lex. The noise pollution here is minute compared to anywhere in NYC.

Bedford it won't be a problem and I haven't seen a part of Armonk that had a problem. The Bellefair community in Rye Brook was right in the landing path so if your'e looking west in Rye Brook or in Purchase, look up when you visit a house. As for northern approaches, the airport is basically in CT so coming from the north will be coming over Greenwich.
