In the state of Florida, the public schools are graded from A (the highest) to F (the lowest) according to the standardized FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Achievement Tests) - the results for 2008 are just coming out, but you can find historical and 2007 grades at this web address - http://www.collier.k12.fl.us/about/docs/SchoolGrades.pdf

Hope that proves helpful to you and your family.

Great question. You sound like us about 5 years ago, when our sons were 3 and 4 years old. We live in Michigan and bought a 2nd home in Naples. We ended up putting our boys in Montessori schools - one in each state. In Naples, we chose Cedar Montessori, and we were very happy with our decision. The entire staff made us feel welcome, and our children were able to meet new friends and continue learning new skills. A Montessori education is well regarded, especially in the early years, and the classroom materials and teaching philosphies are almost identical from one school to the other, so we felt the transition would be easier for our children. We stayed in Florida only for the Winter "semester" from Winter Break to Spring Break, so our children were in Michigan both in the Fall and in the Spring. It was a great school for us, and definitely worth looking into. Good luck with your decision!

Dear Sarah,

If you need a good source for local school information, you might wish to call the Collier County Schools at (239) 377-0001 or the Lee County Schools at (239) 454-6130. Besides these two main sources, we have a fine assemblage of private schools! We have raised 2 children that attended Collier County Schools and our experience was fabulous! We benefitted from Golden Gate Elementary School, Big Cypress Elementary School, Poincianna Elementary School, Pine Ridge Middle School, Gulfview Middle School and Lely High School! Why so many schools, you may wonder? We never moved throughout this period but our children were both placed in "gifted" programs and were moved to the appropriate centers for these activities for the appropriate grade level. We also participated in baseball, volleyball, track, swimming, diving, model UN, and a number of excellent open houses! We found our teaching staff to be excellent and the considerations made on behalf of our children to meet our anticipations! Dive in! Rest assured we have good schools and excellent teachers in our midst!

Is there no way your child could spend the school year in one school?? I would think going back and forth would keep her from forming lasting friendships. She would always be the "new kid". and an outsider. Any extra-curricular activities that need to be registered and attended from the start of the year would not be available to her. Her education would be in constant state of disruption. Unless absolutely necessary, that kind of moving around seems very unfair to her. My daughter is an educator, and she has some students whose school year is split between states. She feels so sorry for these kids not only for their instability, but because they are always playing catch-up (which most are unable to accomplish), and many have become underacheivers in the process.
