I live in Almaden Valley and I have to say I can't imagine a safer place to live and raise a family, or live out your senior years. If you want to check out homes in Almaden, contact me.
Just strolling the quiet, beautiful, tree lined streets filled with beautiful, historical homes will make you want to win the lottery so you can buy a home there.
Crime is low, it has a wonderful neighborhood association and neighbors know and appreciate each other, it is a very tight-knit community of people who care about preserving the past and when renovating their homes, they make sure to keep the aesthetics true to how the home was designed 100 years ago. (Sure, there a few homes which have been purchased and renovated to a more modern style but, I say shame on them)! The Rose Garden was developed to be the creme de la creme of San Jose and the original homes, kept to their true identity soar in beauty and out the newly, remodeled homes to shame.
The streets are quiet and you can enjoy watching squirrels run up and down trees while listening to the thousands of birds who nest in the trees.
if you are looking for landscaping ideas, look no further! Some of the best curb appeal is yours to enjoy.
The Rose Garden is also home to Zanatto's Family Market which has been in business in the area since the 1950's. If you are planning a picnic at the beautiful Rose Garden Park, be sure to stop at Zanatto's deli where they make some of the best sandwiches in town. AND if you are looking for amazing side dishes, look no further! Their deli has a huge array of delicious goodies. (My personal favorite is their Mashed Potato Salad), I being a true fan on potato salad and have tried it all over the country believe that this is one of the best salads I have ever eaten. One suggestion: fax your sandwich order prior to going to the store. There is always a long line of customers trying to get their hands on their amazing sandwiches and delicious goodies!
What makes this neighborhood safe is a very simple question to answer. There are two reasons, one is location and two is the tight-knot community which has an amazing neighborhood association which stays abreast of everything that is going on. They have monthly meetings (open to people in the neighborhood) where, if any, problems are occurring and they are addressed immediately. The neighborhood also has been able to work side-by-side with police and city council members to keep it safe
I hope this helps, now go and make an afternoon out of visiting the places I highly reccommeded!
The other agents have given you web sites where you should look. The reason being most realestate pro's won't directly answer your question as they could then be held liable as pro's for what they say. ie; they say the area is safe and you buy the home on their recommendation then some crime occurs and your agent gets sued because they "said it was safe". So look at those web sites and make up your own mind, and if the realtor you chose does directly answer your questions he/she is not very bright and will most likely not be or continue to be in realestate for long.
Sorry to be so blunt about your question, but for your own piece of mind look for yourself.

You can check out http://www.crimereports.com for information presented in a map format. You'd be amazed though because it shows everything down to traffic citations. It's truly impressive when see an area that has no reports for a period of time. =)
There are certainly generalizations that can be made, but certainly for the size its metro area San Jose one of the safest in the nation. I believe in 2002 and 2005 San Jose was ranked #1 for cities population 500,000 or more.
