Wendy, Home Buyer in Key West, FL

Fairmont Park area??? We are moving to Norfolk in about 2 months and we are currently looking to buy.

Asked by Wendy, Key West, FL Fri Mar 7, 2008

We've found a nice, affordable house on Lens Ave that we're thinking of getting.. Is this a high crime area?? DH is navy and will be deployed so I want to live somewhere safe. Thanks!!

Hi Wendy,

Call or Email me with some criteria and I will start searching on your behalf. I have a lot of experience in helping military families relocate into and out of the Hampton Roads community. Simply share with me what you really want in a home and how much your budget can handle and I'll get started right away. By the way, I'm a life-long resident of this area so I'm pretty familiar with every neighborhood. God Bless the Military!!!

What price range are you looking in? It will be easier to tell you neighborhoods. Stay away from Fairmont park though, not a good area. Wynona which isn't far from there is nice. I live in Rose Gardens considered part of Wards Corner and it's nice. We're selling a 4 bd 2 ba for $189990 if that gives an idea of price range. Some parts of Wards Corner aren't so great but the neighborhoods closer to DePaul Hosp. are okay. Also heading down little creek toward Hampton there's some nice neighborhoods. We're really close to the base and the interstate.

I hope this isn't too late to answer your question. Hell no I wouldn't move into Fairmont park. I grew up there 30 years ago when it was a really nice neighborhood, but since the "projects" were torn down those people started moving in. My parents had their house broken into, vandalized, cars broken into, etc. before they finally moved out of the area. I know that it will only get worse because the government is subsidizing another area close to Lens ave/Fairmont Park and it doesn't look good for those who actually care about their homes.
I would try Ghent, Larchmont, Pamlico, Talbot Park, Belvedere or areas near those neighborhoods.

"Those" people? You mean Black people? Do you personally know those people? If not, how can you judge? Good to know Virginia still harbors a bunch of bigoted racists.

You should rent for a year. This way you can explore the neighborhoods yourself. The housing market here is just starting to adjust downwards as more and more houses sit on the market unsold. Prices are not reasonable. I moved to area in 2005 and was shocked at the high prices. Today, for example a house that sold for $129,000 in 2002 is now listed at $239,000. That is what I call "bubble" pricing. If you are patient, you can get a good deal in a few years.

you can search crime in Norfolk from the city web site norfolkgov. Have you been in this neighborhood or are you just searching from the internet. If you are in the area I would suggest driving thru any neighborhood at night to see what is going on
