Our landlord sold our house and the new owners want us to leave before our lease is up and the current

Asked by Jessica, Tremont, IL Wed Mar 5, 2008

landlord said the depoit we paid goes to the new owners. Is this legal? We didn't know the house was up for sale. Do we just pay the landlord this month and the new owners next month for the days we'll be in the house and hope that the new owners give us our deposit back, or is there something we can do?

A new owner MUST honor a current lease on property they purchase. Your new landlord will receive your deposit from your old landlord and it must be returned when you move out as per the original lease. One exception, if the property is foreclosed on, you must vacate when the property is sold at auction.
