There are lots of good neighborhoods in Petaluma! The west side is built around the historic riverfront downtown (1870's) with beautiful iron-front and Victorian architecture while the eastside was developed starting in the 1970's with everything from '70's ranch style homes to sprawling mini-mansions. The area outside the city limits offers some of the best country living anywhere...some areas similar to Mediterranean grape growing districts. Petaluma was the 1st city to have urban growth limits and urban growth boundaries. A 25 year urban (city) growth boundary was just extended again by public vote. It can not be changed without public consent and the public (us) are very happy without more traffic and population so it will probably be a permanent boundary. That leaves huge greenbelts around the city and the county lands beyond are protected by zoning, a well financed "Sonoma County Agricultural and Open Space" authority (again the 1st time a county has voted fro a sales tax solely for preserving open space). A nice 3 bed/2bath home can be rented for $1,300 to $1,800 a month. I hope this helps. I have family in Ashland as was just up your way at Thanksgiving.

What makes Petaluma one of the best places to live is that there really is no real undesirable sections of Petaluma. Each neighborhood has its own personality and appeal.

So it depends what you are looking for in a living situation.

Do you live in Sonoma now? If so I would recommend finding out what areas have homes available and just walk around and get a feel for the town.

The West Side has a better rep than the east side. However there are some good schools in the East Side.
