Home Buying in West Haven>Question Details

Lola, Home Buyer in New Haven, CT

Brand new construction off Route 1 (Boston Post Road)

Asked by Lola, New Haven, CT Mon Feb 18, 2008

I am thinking of buying a home that is off Route 1 and across the street from UNH. The street is quiet and you can hear a little bit of the traffic. I am not familiar with the neighborhood and area. Is the neighborhood safe and is this a good starter home?

Only a buyer can decide if an area is "good" or not. Each person is different, so dealing with one question off the internet, NO Realtor can do you justice with regards to this kind of question. With respects to safety, check with your local police department. They should be able to provide stats or at the very least point you in the right direction to get your question answered. If you would like to talk allowing me to ask a few pointed questions I would be in a far greater position to assist you. Please feel free to contact me at (203) 979-2132 or email me at gmcintosh@kw.com. I look forward to speaking with you soon.

I wouldn't exactly say its the safest neighborhood on the books .. Also pay close attention to property taxes in West Haven. There's all sorts of houses in all sorts of location for sale in all sorts of price ranges.. Whats your price range? What are your NEEDS and WANTS?

Hello,
Sometimes the University will have seperate statistics. Here is a link to UNH http://www.newhaven.edu/ . And if you are thinking of moving that close to a University, you may want to know what's happening on Campus. Look under Student Life and Safety. Also, check out West Haven's School system report. http://www.whschools.org/page.cfm?p=443
I hope this helps.

I grew up in a wealthy suburb but, at 26, found that I had few options on the shoreline outside of West Haven for a good sized starter home. I live near the beaches and the center of town and I love where I live. It's a dead end street with 12 or so single family homes and we have no crime on our street. I would not recommend living anywhere off of Route 1, however. That area of town is, to me, somewhat unsafe and homes there do tend to sell for less than near me. However, I know people who live there but, as a female, I did not want to live there since I do not always come home before 8 pm. Only you know whether or not you will feel safe there but be sure to research the crime statistics from the police department first!

Forget West Haven. I used to live just down the street from the new homes. High Taxes, High crime, and a lousy public school system. Buy a home in the flats of woodbridge and get a good education for your kids.
