Kevin Keenan, Home Buyer in Greensboro, NC

Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or elsewhere for particular purposes?

Asked by Kevin Keenan, Greensboro, NC Wed Dec 31, 2008

Living abroad, but summer in the US. Thinking of buying a home near university in Triangle area that could be rental property during school year, then serve as residence for family during summer visits.

Pretty flexible about specifics, but ideal would probably be 3BR, 2 bath single family or town house. Maybe in the $150,000 to $170,000 range?

My question, would Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, or elsewhere be recommended place to begin search.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

The zipcode around NCSU is 27695. Performing a search in that area that met your criteria did not result in any currently listed properties. I would suggest trying the "Map" feature in the link below to help find the closest properties to NCSU that do meet your criteria.

Might be very hard to find something in Chapel Hill in this price point - this is an area with a very high occupancy rate and high home values. Could be some good opportunities near NC State in Raleigh that would fit your specifications. Durham has areas that are good and areas that aren't as good near Duke University - make sure to work with an agent that knows the area well.

Best of luck - interest rates are terrific right now, and there are some good opportunities!

Hi Kevin,
I would suggest Chapel Hill for an investment and great quality of life during your summer visits. UNC has big plans for expansion and with the increase of students continuing years into the future you should have good rental and appreciation potential.
