Pam, Other/Just Looking in Sacramento, CA

My daughter is going to be stationed at Ft. Lewis Army Base. Her husband may not be stationed with her.

Asked by Pam, Sacramento, CA Sun Jan 27, 2008

Where is a safe location for her to live? Thank you in advance for your help.

My daughter is on an unaccompanied tour in Italy. She's renting off base, and I was also concerned for her. Besides safety concerns your daughter might want to consider the commute time and the home or rental prices.
I would recommend either Olympia, Lacey or Dupont. Dupont is right across from Ft. Lewis. Lot's of military families choose to live there for the amenities and convenience. It's a great little town, but if your daughter wants some more distance from the military, then Olympia would be a great choice as well.
Check out my video tours of Dupont, Olympia and Ft. Lewis on my web site's "local communities" page.
Good Luck!

Hi Pam - Hands down anywhere in Thurston County is her best bet! Not only are the neighborhoods safe in the Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater areas, but our home prices and the schools are the best! Ft. Lewis is only 20 minutes from most places in Olympia. You can check out my website for some great information on the Thurston County areas. Good luck!

Puyallup is a great area to live in, it is close to both Ft Lewis and the Air Force base. My father was stationed at Ft. Lewis for years and still lives in Puyallup after retirement. There is a ton of shopping, lots of jobs and a very good school district. There are many afforable housing options too. Rents start at about $400 per bedroom for a nice single family home, a liitle less for appartment homes. Prices on homes start at about 250k for a 3 bed 2 bath, a little less if the home needs tlc. Feel free to e-mail or phone if you have any other questions. There are many great areas for your daughter to look at. Some are Dupont, Lacey, Puyallup, Northend Tacoma, and University Place. It really depends on what type of town she would like to live in. She will have her choice of housing from apts., to condos, to homes...Will she rent or buy?

About safety, look on the Pierce County Website for crime rates. The city of Lacey is in Thurston County.

Hope that this helps!

It's been a while since you posted this question - hope this message is not too late.

Graham and Spanaway have nice communities with a more rural feel and good home pricing. Lacey is an expanding city. The best way to search is to visit the communities and also research the neighborhood and their amenities. A Realtor can help gathering information and help your daughter view the areas and show her some sample homes before she makes a decision what area she likes the best.
