Gifts from your realtor- I confess- I've been watching alot of HGTV!lol

Asked by LS, Dallas, TX Wed Jan 23, 2008

just wondering if it's common for your realtor to give you a "gift" once you close on property.......I have one friend that recieved a gift card and another who received an oven. (comparable purchase prices) I've been watching alot of HGTV- I have to admit- us first time home buyers can learn alot from it while at the same time some of it gives us a false sense of simplicity in the home buying process.

LS,

It's my policy to give my buyers and sellers a closing gift. It serves as a "thank you" for working with me. Some of my colleagues don't give anything and some even make the gifts themselves (craft projects). I'm glad you realize that HGTV, although informative in some aspects, can present an over-simplified, or even over-exaggerated picture of reality.

I think it is a nice way to say thankyou. It is just good business.

Thanks Sandy
Yeah that HGTV is addicting!lol
I feel for a first time home buyer that hasn't yet began the process and thinks it will work like it does on those shows- especially the one with Sandra called "Property Virgins."

It's a goodwill gesture that many agents employ, but many do not. It is common, but if you provide excellent service, your clients will refer you whether or not you throw in a gift card at the end. (And likewise, if you let your clients down, they won't refer you, no matter how big of a gift card you give!).

I always thought that closing gifts were standard. I think that if a buyer doesn't get one, it may hurt their feelings. I think as an agent, I would want to give something to help ensure referrals. Am I off base?
