room addition cost

Asked by Vert, San Jose, CA Mon Jan 14, 2008

Hi, we live in Cambrian area, want to extend our house by ~500 feet - add another room and a bathroom. Does any one have a ballpark estimate for such addition? Thx!

I'm the expert in house additions, i would estimate your project as $160 - $190 per sq.ft.
Or $80 - 95K depends on finish materials to be used. Visit my website with Service magic:

Definitely check with the City to find out about extending the footprint of your home, and ask them the cost of permits. For a bathroom I'd say you may find costs up to $350 per sq ft depending on the finishes you choose -- soaking tub anyone? I'd also have a conversation with a few local Realtors about the type of bath finishes would garner you the most possible return on your remodeling dollars. Give 'em a call, we Realtors love to talk!

500 sqft is a general addition in most cases anything more needs special permits but please ask city for specific details. Rule of thumb is 200-300 per sqft. Depending upon contractor. If you need a referal feel free to email me.
