I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I own a firm in Northern Michigan and have an agent who can service that area. His name is Lance Weyeneth and he would do an excellent job for you. My company, Homewaters, L.L.C., was built to primarily market waterfront properties, but we do, on occasion, handle the sale of other types of real estate. If we feel we can give you the best chance of selling, we'd love to work with you. If we feel you'd be better serviced by another firm, we can put you in touch with a solid agent who can take care of you. Lance can be reached by going to the agent page of our website, http://www.homewaters.net. I hope we can help make this difficult situation a little easier for you and your family. I'll let Lance know you may be contacting him.
I am sorry about your loss.
I have not seen anyone from Onaway answering questions here, though someone might. If you don't get an agent from the area to answer, drop me an email and I will get someone to talk with you about the house.
Hopefully, your father didn't pass intestate (ie without a recorded will). Some states will require you to appoint a local representative agent (someone who lives in the county where your father passed) to send/receive certain official correspondence--unless you intend to stay in MI until the close of the probate estate. Probate estates can take as little as 3 months, but they tend to last at least 1-2 years on the average.
You might want to consider hiring a probate attorney to help you with all of this.
