I like Beacon Ave. for its convenience to the Journal Square PATH and to Rte 139 (State Hwy). The prices there are also pretty reasonable. It's not the most chichi neighborhood in the city. If that's what you're looking for, you want to be downtown.

In my opinion, it's always a good idea to spend some time in any neighborhood where you're thinking of buying. (Advice I got from a co-worker when I was looking to purchase my first home 30+ years ago.) This is especially important in a city where the character of the neighborhood changes block-to-block.

Your real estate agent should be able to help you.

You may want to check salary.com, where you can check that city, state or zipcode to determine the average salary for your profession.
