Slave2dogs, Both Buyer and Seller in Syracuse, NY

Looking to buy a house in Syracuse, NY or commutable to...WHAT is with the taxes in this area?!?

Asked by Slave2dogs, Syracuse, NY Tue Feb 10, 2009

I've been told by agents that Syracuse, NY prices have been pretty stable over the years and that unlike other places, they do not see the crazy highs and lows common in other areas. Although I have seen some seemingly reasonably priced homes, the TAXES are outrageous - often more than $1,200. per month(taxes alone). I'm looking for insight here. I own a home in Southern NY, close to NYC in a desirable area (yet fairly rural so the population density or lack thereof wouldn't come into play here when trying to find an excuse for Syracuse)and pay less than half the taxes these poor people in Syracuse do. No wonder they don't see RE bubbles - the towns are taking what should be seller profits! Only the inner city in the renaissance zone near Syracuse U seems to be a little bit more reasonable. Manlius, Camillus, Fayetteville, and Marcellus have ridiculous taxes, as do many parts of Syracuse proper. Does anyone know why?
