How do we find if a killing or a suicide happened in a property?

Asked by Siva, 07095 Fri May 1, 2009

I'm interested in buying a townhome/condo/Single Family home, in and around Scotch Plains/Livingston. However, how do I find out if someone who had lived there committed suicide or any other killings in that house?

Hi Siva, Jeannie Feenick here - my first suggestion is to ask the agent directly - while the agent cannot share with you information regarding properties surrounding the one you are considering, they may be able to share information specific to the one you are considering.

Then, as always, do your own research -- pop the address into google, with descriptive text that captures your concerns and see what comes up. You could also try the local police. For any aspect of a purchase that matters greatly to you, it is always good to do your own research.

You maybe able to find that by calling the local police department.

Siva,

If you can look beyond that circumstance sounds to me like an opportunity to purchase that home at a discounted rate. I say this because I am aware of a home in Manaquan, NJ wherein a murder took place that sold at below market value. It was torn down and a new property rebuilt, but that type of stigma MIGHT provide you with leverage to purchase the property at below market value.

you can try google of sellers or address, ask neighbors or police. It isnt something that the listing agent generally must disclose .
