Hurricanes can never be taken lightly no matter what the category is. I am a native Floridian and have lived in Miami and Pembroke Pines for over 40 combined years. I have been through several hurricanes, including hurricane Andrew. I have lived in Pembroke Pines now for 15 years and we have had several hurricanes brush us and really never caused more than power outages and fallen trees and some roof damage.

The category alone of a storm is not the only thing to consider but also what side of the eye you are on when the storm hits. North of the eye or south of the eye. This determines where the stronger winds are and how much more severe damage a storm can impact. Good example, even though Wilma was a category 2 it did more roof damage to the Broward area because we got battered by the stronger winds because of the directon of the eye of the storm when it hit. A few years before that a category 3 brushed by us and there were fallen trees and power outages and barely anyones roofs were damaged. Always be prepared no matter what category! Stock up and board up.

Yes. Hurricane Wilma -  low category 2 did damage, a category 1 about 10 years ago brushed us and several hurricane warnings over the last 15 years.
