If you are talking about schools, my advice is put your children in a private school. Southern schools are not the cream of the crop. We moved from Virginia to St. Pete in the early 1990's. Our kids were way above their classmates (and they were in public school in Virginia). We moved North and West again 3 years later and they had some catching up to do. I'm glad we settled where the quality of education was better as they all got into wonderful colleges.

In re-reading your question I see you posted it under "schools." Are you asking if the schools are competitive in St Petersburg? If so do you mean in sports? Or, are you asking about real estate in general as many of us assumed?

Prices are very competitive and negotiable. In this market you must be able to have the property you want researched and see what the current market value is and if it is priced too high you must take in statistics and proof to show the Seller why you are making a lower offer. Sellers are not stupid but sometime need the correct information. They want to sell. They too have bottom lines and are no longer trying to get prices from 2007. However, some Realtors are not helping them by allowing them to overprice their properties. It just causes disappointment and frustration. So, when it comes to competitiveness - yes it is a competitive market. But through research and negotiation you can buy an excellent home today in St. Petersburg just by workoing with the right Realtor and Lender. I hope you love living in St Petersburg as much as I do!

Hi Richards,

I'm glad to hear that folks from up north are still coming down. You're about the fourth person I've dealt with recently who are moving here from MA. What's going on up there.

I assume you're asking about pricing on housing. If so, all I can say is it's a good time to be a buyer. Financing is tough but not impossible. If your credit is good there should be a problem financing & there are still options even for someone who doesn't have much for a down payment with VA & FHA loans.

When you determine when you're coming down & what you're going to be looking for please give me a call.

Well, it will be different that is for sure. When you ask about competitive I don' know what area you are referring too. But Saint Petersburg in general is very laid back and easy going. If the sun is shining 360 days out of the year, it has an impact on your live.
