Blogging can be valuable by providing more content to be found by search engines, it is a way for a potential client to personally connect with you, it is easier to get local sites to link to your blog with community info than it is to your RE homepage.

The easiest way to start a blog is probably through http://www.blogger.com and follow the instruction for your free blog.

Keep it local! I see a lot of agents posting about generic/national real estate statistics, when the people they're trying to reach dont have the same interest in real estate as they do. Write about your town, restaurants and big events. If you can get a couple quality posts up a week you will notice the traffic increase in less than half a year (sounds long but your marketing for the long run). Also consider paying local writers off craigslist to talk about local stuff on your blog. Trade links with local bloggers.

We used Typepad to get our blog up and going. It has great flexibility if you have a very basic knowledge of HTML. There are alot of good bloogers that answer questions on this site and I recommend that you go to their sites and see who they link too and the platforms they use and research them to find the best for you. Good luck with starting the blog and stay focused on using your blog regularly.

Type in "blogging" on google and you'll get hundreds of blogs sites that are free. You get them because you are trying to make a personal connection with people. Some people think they find better connections with bloggers. They also have a way to gauge your intel by reading your thoughts on paper.

Google also has a free blog to attach to your website. A blog give you another avenue to keep in touch with a community of people about events both local and national. It also gives the public an avenue to keep in touch.

Lisa, There are many companies which provide the basics of a blog. You can put one together yourself. The basics are "WordPress" and this allows many adaptations. I don't think a blog is THAT important to a Realtor/Licensee. I'm really not convinced of the business generation from a blog. I'm now promoting a "Community Blog" which will allow Non-profits in my area to post the happenings of their non-profit onto the blog for their members to visit. I have a blog for my weekly radio show and developed it explicitly for that purpose but I also post blog pieces not radio show related.
I use "Blogging Systems" for my blog but like I said, you can readily do this yourself. It is part of Web 2.0 which is "social networking" and is the basis of Trulia voices. I spend too much time on this site. I should be lead generating and not getting roped into some of the more outrageous threads on this site!!
