Dear Top Voices,
Foremost, I want to thank you for being an active part of our community on Trulia Voices. We believe in making Trulia Voices a valuable resource for lots and lots of professionals and consumers, and are constantly seeking ways to enhance your experience.

To that end, I’m pleased to tell you – our most active users – about a number of upcoming improvements that will be launching shortly based on your feedback.

*What we’ve heard:*
Most people want to keep the ability for everyone to answer questions in all locations, but users would benefit from highlighting the location of the contributors who ask or answer questions.

*Trulia's proposed change:*
We will display the user’s location next to their picture. With this change, users will see where the poster’s location directly next to their question or answer.

*What we’ve heard:*
The Top Voices feature does not reflect the location of the poster and other factors, and primarily lists the quantity of postings, making it less useful to consumers.

*Trulia's proposed change:*
We are planning to change Top Voices to "Member Search”, where we will identify great, local, active contributors by region and list these members factoring in multiple criteria including best answers, location, recent activity, thumbs up and thumbs down. Member Search will also help users easily find other members and highlight active and high-quality contributors. So if you are providing lots of great answers now, you’ll continue to be featured prominently. A location-specific "find an agent" tool based on Member Search is also in the works and will further increase the visibility of Voices users across the site.

”Member Search” is still in development, but it is a top priority on our list of Voices improvements. We are working hard to ensure that upcoming changes address the issues raised in the best way possible, so we appreciate your patience as we move forward.

*What we’ve heard:*
It is not really clear what thumbs up and thumbs down mean. People like the ability to help to moderate Trulia Voices, but it can be confusing.

*Trulia's proposed change:*
We will incorporate the thumbs up and thumbs down tool into Member Search as a measure of a post’s quality and relevancy, but with a very important addition: not all thumbs up and down will be considered equally. Instead, we will take into consideration who is giving the thumbs up or thumbs down. For example, more weight will be given to a thumbs-up vote if it comes from a user who has a given lots of great answers. We will are also working to eliminate any attempts at gaming the system such as giving excessive thumbs up votes to friends' posts, working in groups, creating new accounts and other tactics. Overall, this change will make the thumbs rating system a fairer evaluation of each contribution’s usefulness.

While nothing happens overnight, we believe these changes are a step in the right direction toward improving the quality Trulia Voices. We appreciate the feedback that we’ve gotten from our users, and we’re looking forward to hearing from you as we roll out new features this year and in 2008.

Hi Pete:

Thank for a couple of your recent responses about improving Trulia to meet consumer and Realtors needs. Sounds like there will be some awesome enhancement coming out. I will be quite interested in finding what they are.

I am especially interested in seeing your response to Steve about an issue which we have already addressed many times before on Trulia forum. I am glad that Trulia has been planning and will be doing something about it.

In Steve and a few other recent entries, there seem to be a huge misunderstanding and assumption on their part about why the majority of Realtors are on Trulia forum to answer questions.

From what I read about Steve and other postings and blogs, he wrongly assumed the current top voices are only answering questions to rake up numbers in order to improve the ranking. his might be true with a couple posters who provide large volume of answers with no, minimum, or unprofessional answers.

But, Steve, for many of us, that’s an entirely unfair accusation. I am stunned that as realtors with a mission to stress accuracy, truth and impartiality, these kinds of assumptions are made online carelessly.

Anyway, Pete, that’s why I went and looked for a few questions the true Trulians (the ones who have been faithfully participating and contributing) posted during the past few months. They are listed below.

This is, by no means, is NOT a complete list of what we have suggested so far – This is not my job to
keep track of them and I need to spend time on other things. But perhaps Trulia can review these comments and more and consider implementing some solutions.

The first couple addresses how to rank the contributors (TUs and Best Answers combined); how BEST ANSWERS, TUs are awarded (I am skipping how TDs are being handed out); and other Trulia technical improvement suggestions.

Steve and other concerned none or minimum participants – I hope this makes you understand that we do care about the quality of the answers but not the quantify. There are many participants on Trulia; many, many good ones but also, some mediocrity ones; by staying out, and by proclaiming that you provide quality answers, you are only depriving both Trulia and your own standing on Trulia.

Thanks again for reviewing the list.

These suggestions do not come from Realtors who are only interested in artificial numbers.

I am sure some will be implemented. Questions? Pete? Call me (415) 771-0293 or email me for clarification.

Thanks,
Sylvia

A big TU for you Sylvia. Thanks for spending the time to collect the pertinent threads and putting this post together. I believe that Trulia should share their thoughts and ideas on how to change the system before they make the changes. Why go through the trouble of changing the system without getting feedback first. It's not like Trulia has to ask for permission to change the system, but it would be a smart move to check with those who make up Trulia Voices and I think that goes beyond reading opinions expressed in past posts. Let's hope that Trulia will make it a community effort.

Well Roger, since you asked . . .

Where is Springfield?
http://www.trulia.com/voices/Home_Buying/Where_is_Springfiel…

When I noticed the change, I went and changed my profile from location 60302 to location Oak Park, IL.
However, IL doesn't show up on the avatar. Oak Park, CA is pretty small, but if you live near there I'm sure you would think of CA before IL. Oak Park, MI has a decent population too.

It is really a pain having to convert someones zip code into what city or state they are in.

Hi everyone,
We're still working on new features and enhancements, So please stay tuned. I know we didn't address every suggestion this time, but they're all on my list! We greatly appreciate your feedback and comments to make Trulia better. Please keep the feedback coming, either through Voices or via private email, as you see fit. I'm curious how the small profile change we just released works out for y'all. Better? Worse? Indifferent?
Again, many thanks to everyone for your great contributions and frank feedback.

What is the best way to actually give feedback or requests. I know there is an option but is that the best route.

Wow Sylvia,

This is great. Thank you for putting this together. I hope you all know that we have been listening to these requests and will be implementing new Voices features in the near future. But I still encourage you all to keep giving us this kind of feedback. It's really appreciated and is helping us develop some great new ideas.

Best Wishes,

I think we will continue to watch this site and make sure it serves the customers and real estate pros.

There are a lot of caring and knowledgable real estate professionals who put in a lot of time and energy to help the customers, other Realtors and Trulia to grow over the past year; and I truly hope Trulia is doing the right thing by all!

Thumbs up Pete, i cant wait to see the improvements. I think as Trulia grows its ability to adjust with user needs will enable it to skyrocket to unchartered territories.
