Generally figure at least 8' x 10'
If you cannot fit at least a single bed, then it is a storage room

Emily,

Sounds like I'm the only Texan answering on this post, but as what I mean a "California Closet" to be is an armoire used as storage for clothes and nothing more. Knowing that price/ sq. ft. is Soo unreasonably high, it has been joked that builders just stopped putting closets in all together to make room for more bedroom sq. ft. Atleast that's my interpretation!

In the greatest state of California most bedrooms, by our various building departments, means having a closet. This might be specific to California as our homes are a little more "newer" than some of the states which first got into the union!!!! I know many Eastern "bedrooms' where built for an Armoire or free standing wardrobe. I've seen many homes in California built with septic systems where the "Den" has to be dimensionally smaller than the permitted bedrooms (8x8, 8x10') but have also seen many very large "Utility rooms" which had beds and wardrobe closets/Armories!
If you have to go through one bedroom to get to another that usually won't be counted by an appraiser regardless if it has it's own window, closet, etc. We have the same issues with alleged "units”. Most definitions of a "unit" would have a bathroom plus cooking facilities. I've seen many an "illegal" unit where the cooking facility is the old "Pullman" kitchen set up. They can be unplugged and moved pretty quickly when an appraiser or city/county inspector comes a calling!! The "Pullman" kitchens are those units with self contained cooking unit/refrigerator and sink all in one.

A bedroom must have a closet and a window (natural light and ventilation). The location and size of the window opening are subject to code requirements, for emergency exiting for residents. Minimum size requirements can vary by ordinance or state adopted code.

Hi Josh,

Just curious - what is a California closet exactly?

Thank you,

Usually, the only main considerable factor to see if a room can be a "bedroom" is if it has a closet. And no... a California closet doesn't count! :)

Hello Bernardine. A bedroom usually has to have a window, heating and a closet to be considered a bedroom. Many times, when a room does not have a closet, the room will be called a den or an office. You can check with your local building department for the specific requirements in your area.
