I know that people don't like to share, or give away their secrets, however; I am curious about something.

Could someone explain to me in layman's terms how search engines work? How do you get your website on the first page? What are things that you can do to help get higher placement? Are their key words? Where do the words need to be? Do domain names help?

Hi Barbara, This is a much more complicated process than it seems. If you really want to come up first in the searches, you can hire a company that specializes in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). There are a few tips and tricks you can use to make your website turn up first, but if you are competing with 10 other companies, you'll most likely need the help of a professional who knows how to do this.

Each search engine such as Google, Yahoo, etc will use different methods to draw forth the most relevant searches. There are factors such as tags that are on your website, how many times the word is repeated in certain pages, etc. However - you may want to ask your question on Yahoo! Answers, as this page is more relevant for real estate as opposed to web/tech related questions.

I hate to say it, but attend one of the FREE (scam) seminars that tell you how to make money on-line via Ebay or whatever else. Don't buy their tapes or seminars but it will give you a window into how the overall concept works.
