Do you read other answers to a question before posting your own answer?

Asked by Patti Pereyra, Chicago, IL Wed Oct 17, 2007

I ask because I notice more and more often so many redundant answers, I'm just wondering. I know I don't always due to the time factor, but when I do and see the question seems to have been answered pretty sufficiently, I don't contribute.

Hi Patti. I scan the other answers and will only answer if I feel I have something to add or I disagree with another post. Sometimes, you can't avoid answers that say similar things as they are posted almost simultaneously. When that happens and the two answers say similar things, I think it only reinforces the answers. I have also seen answers that were posted much later and they just repeat what someone else said and I can't help but wonder if it's due to not having read previous answers or if it's just to increase the # of answered questions. I also have to admit that I usually stay away from questions that already have a lot of answers. I may read the answers if it's a topic of interest, but I don't usually add anything.

Good Morning,
I always read the other answers, If I see there is something missing I'll add my professional opinion.

I do both. Sometimes I answer the question before reading the answers if I am passionate about it. Again if i read the answers it could taint my answer. Just a gut feeling sometimes.

Hi Patti, I might glance over a couple but my answers usually are the same as other agents.

If I feel strongly about the question, I'll answer before reading other answers. I try to read answers first but that is not always the case.

I do both. Sometimes when I read the other questions, my answer is different because the whole thread has gone in a different direction. I can answer the question true and undistorted by not reading others first. When I do read first I tend to not answer if it has been answered to satisfaction. I don't want to waste your time reading or my time typing.

Hello,

I try to read the answers as much a possible. Many times I agree with the answers, however I try to put a different perspective on the topic. It is true, many people do post the same answers as 3-4 answers already given. It is possible that seeing the same answer a few times from different people may reassure them as to the correct answer for their questions.

Yes, I read all other answers as to not duplicate already said information.

I always read the other answers. If I have nothing new to contribute, I don't answer either. I will give thumbs down to redundant answers. One of my Trulia pet peeves!!! You do have to check the time factor for the postings, I agree. Sometimes they come in simultaneously, sometimes people must like to see their answers in print, or just be trying to get their numbers up!

I usually write my message first and post before I read what has already been posted. I find that sometimes when I read other answers.....I tend to look at the question with another question. Not sure if this makes much sense to anther reader.
