Need a family-friendly neighborhood close to LA Medical Center (Downtown)

Asked by Dawn, Los Angeles, CA Tue Oct 14, 2008

My husband is considering a position at USC's School of Medicine
(located Downtown near the LA County Medical Center). My main focus
at this point is finding a safe neighborhood with great schools. My
son is in Kindergarden right now.

After much research I am considering the South Pasadena area. Due to:
1. its proximity to my husband's workplace (15 minute drive), 2.
all "10" rated schools (Monterey Hills Elem., Marengo Elem., and
eventually South Pasadena Middle School and South Pasadena High
School), and 3. relatively affordable.

San Marino and La Canada/La Crescenta appear to have excellent
schools, but seem too expensive for housing.

Is South Pasadena a good area? And am I missing another neighborhood with an equally good profile that is
nearby?

What is your price range? What size house do you need & how soon do you need to move?

South Pasadena is a great area and so are the other communities you have named. La Crescenta should be more affordable than La Canada. It seems that you have done great research and you should really determine if you are going to put your kid(s) in public v. private. Obviously if they are in private it doesn't matter if you live in the district. You can also retrieve crime data from the FBI or I believe sites like Trulia and others have this information. I know that you want to be in close proximity to your husband's work but San Gabriel and Arcadia also have good schools. Like I said it seems that you have been doing a lot of the homework already but don't be afraid of contacting a local Realtor and ask for some advice. Things from places to eat to points of interest. I myself am available but if you are dealing w/ someone or decide on someone else I just want to welcome you and let you know you have a local friend.

Hello Dawn,

South Pasadena is a great option. It all depends on your price range though. There seems to be no slip in the housing market in South Pasadena and homes continually going in multiple offers and also low inventory. Another option to consider might be Culver City. Good schools and great neighborhoods and good access to USC, a little more affordable than South Pasadena and NOT in LAUSD and better air quality than South Pasadena (at least in my opinion).
