L, Home Buyer in Atlanta, GA

We are a family with three boys, ages 2,4,7 and moving to Phoenix from Atlanta. Where do you suggest we look?

Asked by L, Atlanta, GA Thu Jun 12, 2008

given our desire for great schools, easy access to outdoor recreation, kid-friendly n'hoods and lack of congestion/traffic. We're moving from Atlanta by the way. Thank you!

Hey L

I am still a big fan of Gilbert unified school district 41.

You mention sailing. The Lakes in Tempe have a fresh water 80 acre lake. I have been in this lake a few time. Clearly some of the best water in metro Phoenix.
The community has a private clubhouse, with a ton of activities. Olympic heated pool, volleyball, tennis, racquetball, game room. In addition they have swim, and summer camp.
You get all of this for an HOA fee of $75. per month, unless you live in a condo, which is more.

They also have their own monthly newspaper. It is a very community involved neighborhood. It is located about 15 minutes from Sky Harbor airport.

The elementary, junior high, and High school are all located within 3/4 of a mile. Each school has a lot of parental involvement, and above average scores. There have been talks for the last two years of adding these schools to the Kyrene school district. Which is a Great school district.

The community has very mature landscaping, and the home are of a mission viejo Californian design
Currently there are 36 homes available ranging from 185K to 1 million.

Attached are two homes I recently toured for two clients that are out of state.
First one is a Condo, however it will give you a good look at the neighborhood…

The second one is a single family home, mostly pictures of the home not the Lake.…

Good Luck,

Hi everyone - it's me "L", the originator of the question.

My husband is with GE and will be working on Central Ave but only occasionally going to the office. Most of the time he'll work from home (as I do) or go to the airport. I am sorry to have been so vague in my original inquiry but appreciate all of the input.

I'm glad someone mentioned the lakes. We are avid sailors but again, schools are the priority and we prefer to live somewhere that's not congested and has plenty of outdoor space/activities to take advantage of with lots of kids and friendly neighbors around. We don't need lots of shopping, fine dining, etc. but don't want to be too remote either.

Areas we've started to consider include North Scottsdale, Chandler and as far out as Estrella (which sounds like a resort!)

Thanks again.

With no reservations at all, I highly recommend North Scottsdale and the Paradise Valley Unified District School System - with acre lots and the top rated schools in the state. Look at Happy Valley Ranch (see or perhaps for complete search information and some homes. I've lived in Happy valley ranch for 15 years now - quiet, safe, desert park-like, close to shopping, schools, hospitals, and the best restaurants and resorts ----------- 2 large lakes with 30 minutes; near Carefree and Cave Creek -hiling trails, biking, great community activities etc......John Lynch, RE/MAX Fine Properties, 480-236-9470

Hello L,

Phoenix is a very large city, 5th largest in the nation. There are number of factors/preferences that you listed. There are number of areas that you could consider. I suggest that we first determine place/area that you are going to work - commuting in a large congested town can be a costly nuisance. Once we know your work address or area than we can go from there.
The other way to start is to select a school district, proffered school and start looking for a home in that area. If you need assistance in checking out schools, contact me and I will e-mail you some helpful information.
