Question Details

Patti Philli…, in Carlsbad, CA

Is it just me, or is there a sudden rash of thumbs down going on the past few days?

Asked by Patti Phillips, Carlsbad, CA Sat Sep 8, 2007

What is up with that? Some of the thumbs down don't even seem to make sense, no matter what angle you are looking at the answer from. Are there people that are just that disgruntled with life that they are looking to put down anyone else out there trying to help or give an opinion? I'm not getting the point here.

Anyone can click a thumbs down. A consumer, an agent, or just somebody that likes to throw eggs.

Sometimes it is merely an act of vandalism. Same kind of people that throw eggs at all the houses on the street will thumb down all the answers to a question.

Other times it is a mistaken understanding of what the community guidelines are and a false assumption about what the poster is trying to do.

Search on " thumbs" You will see a number of discussions about this issue.

Don't take it personally.

A better measure of how you are doing is your UTBA-TA Score. which is something I invented.

I do get a little bent on solid responses that get a thumbs down. I have to admit and I usually counter it with a thumbs up. Positive reinforcement is a thing I BELIEVE is under utilized on this forum. Have you ever noticed the thread where no one gave a thumbs up and there were great responses? Let's focus on positive and ignore the goofs who are thumbing down the detailed and respectable responses.

As much as I enjoy Trulia, I love reality better. I only take things personally when it is from someone I know and respect to keep my emotions in check. I am all for improving oneself from public critiques, but who is critiquing? Someone behind a computer that is faceless? That is when I re-categorize how I feel about a thumbs down.

Don't be discouraged. I received 3 TDs for a great reply about how wonderful Mill Vally or Marin is for families. My answer is not even political nor controversial. People must just hate me that day :-)

If I get a TD, I look at my answers again and see what I can improve, or if I'd change my mind on something (sometimes I can be wrong, amazing to me). If I am still convinced what I said is right, then I smile to myself and move on. Then sometimes i get TUs I have no idea why.

Also, the official meaning of TD is 'not useful'; doesn't mean it is bad or horrible. A lot of times we tend to drift out of the question and the answer is totally irrevalent to the question, then maybe you get a TD. But that's not a big deal also.

Don't talke the bandit bother you. Who knows what strikes their fancy. Just go on to the next one.

Leave the thumbs down button alone. It's unnecessary. It's someones opinion. OPINION.

If you don't like the subject matter... wait, sit back and watch the banter and then move on. Questions get clearer, and answers more defined if it is not shot in the head with a thumbs down.

If the question or answer is offensive or SPAM... flag it and then move on. Trulia takes care of the rest.

The thumbs up button encourages people to continue to contribute.

Let the good times roll...

This has been going on for sometime and it's okay.... in theory. I still get that twinge of "huh"...

I wouldn't ever suppose I have a great answer, since sometimes we're just shooting from the hip with vague questions. And I have been "stalked" by a particular poster (who will remain anonymous - but has admitted to the TD just because he didn't think of the answer first - he admitted to this!)

Anyway - Deborah has a great outlook on this phenomenon - and I tend to follow her lead by trying to be a duck and let it slide off - but it does semi-sting every now and again..

There is no point in it Patti, only reasons. When things are good everyone is happy, when things start to slow down the insecurity mode, panic, etc kicks in, been always like this, just a way of life for some.

Hi Patti,
We've noticed that too, and it's a bit discouraging. I like the way someone else on this board put it:
"the thumbs-down bandit has struck again"!

Thumbs.
Thumbs are so over looked.
Thumbs are not even fingers.
People rarely thumb a ride.
We use to use are thumbs all the time, when we would count cash, now we use a debit card.
Thumbs down use to be a good thing back in the coliseum.
If it were not for text messaging. I don't think I would ever use my thumbs.
Even thumb rings, look strange.
I remember thumb people, you would draw a face on the inside of your thumb, those were fun.
Yep...I wish we could go back to the old days. When there was a problem, you could look that problem in the eye and say
Thumb you.

Patti,
This is not just on Trulia, I had a very unhappy sole accuse me of been a car salesman for adding a blog introducing a new member of our Team. Shame, when it's a tough market people want to hide from the truth or don't like the facts. Selling is Location, Price & Condition. Buying is what the Buyer is willing to pay or qualify for. The deal is what the sellr is willing to settle for or how well the realtor can negotiate.
Why make life complicated and the bash people who take time to help others. This must be the famous 80%. If that's the case I am sticking with the 20%.

Patti,
I too have noticed. I have to not be bothered if someone did not like my answer. It is part of the process and yes sometimes it does not make sense. For the most part it works as it should. Thanks for mentioning it.
